Welcome to the Temple of Venus Genetrix ("Venus the Begetting Mother") the Universal Mother, divine ancestor of the Gens Iulii and of the Roman people, the goddess of Motherhood, fertility and domestic affairs, the Mother of eternal love, goddess of eternal beauty and queen of laughter. Those who rever her and are dedicated to her also seek her protection and intercession in the affairs of their lives and in war.
O Venus regina, Cnidi Paphique,
sperne, dilectam Cypron et vocantis
ture te multo Glycerae decoram
transfer in aedem.
Fervidus tecum puer et solutis
Gratiae zonis properentque Nymphae
et parum comis sine te Iuventas
Mercuriusque.
Come, Cnidian, Paphian queen Venus, come,
Thy well-beloved Cyprus spurn,
Haste, where for thee in Glycera's home
Sweet odours burn.
Bring too thy Cupid, glowing warm,
Graces and Nymphs, unzoned and free,
And Youth, that lacking thee lacks charm,
And Mercury.
Carmina of Horace (8.12.65 BC in Venusia - 27.11. 8 BC), written in 23 BC
