16-Hour Wilderness First Aid Certification

**The full tuition is $180. An $80 deposit is REQUIRED on signup to secure your spot. Because we must purchase textbooks and certification materials in advance, the deposit is non-refundable. The 16-Hour Wilderness Certification Class will be held at the quarry location north of San Antonio.

PLEASE Do NOT use GPS or Online maps to find this location using the address, as it will not get you there. We will email the directions to you.

There will be camping available for everyone interested. No food or meals will be offered this weekend, so if you are camping, you will need to bring your own food as well.

The price of this class includes the wilderness first aid field guide approved for the course study by Emergency Care and Safety Institute.

This course is a great place to start for anyone who wants to be much more medically self-sufficient. The usage for this material ranges from just being able to take care of your own family in a home emergency, to backpacking, hiking or camping trips, to living in a more rural area, to being stranded in a remote location, to a hurricane Katrina (or worse) situation.

This course is also required as part of the Level 2 herbology course.

Please plan for and sign up early if you want to take this class. I've expanded the max number of students we can work with at this new location, but if we don't have enough interest (at least 5 students) by about 2 weeks out, I will need to cancel. Invariably if that happens, I always get several folks asking me why I canceled because they were planning on it (but just hadn't RSVP'd). Because we must buy the materials for the course in advance, we must have at least the $50 deposit but the remaining balance can be paid at the start of the course.

Camping will be available for anyone who wants to stay out there (to include camping Friday night), and I would recommend camping unless you live close by. This kind of a setting will give us a much more realistic environment to teach this class, as well. You'll be able to "car camp" and bring along plenty of camping gear (cooler, etc) as the parking is very close to the camping areas. Only one fire allowed, however, which will be a community fire pit. This is assuming there's not a fire ban, but I doubt there will be.

Saturday will be a long day of classes, but will have enough variety and breaks in the day that it should not feel like a long day.

Sunday will start at 8am again and be finished by around noon.

About the WFA Certification course:

16 hours will include primary and secondary survey, extrication, diagnosing and treating a wide variety of trauma and life-threatening situations, splinting, bandaging, high altitude injuries, heat and cold injuries, disease and infection, snake and insect bites & stings, shock, head injuries, water purification, fluid replacement, building first aid kits and much more.

At least 50% of this class is hands-on training and practice. You can't really learn these skills without the pressure of having to perform the tasks in the classroom to start with.

The testing is both hands-on and a written test.

The certification is provided by ECSI, which is created, endorsed and underwritten by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

A certification card is issued which is valid for 2 years.
