About Thames EuroClub - The Language Club in Berkshire

1. Why are these Pages Private?

We want to make sure that we don't have any issues with those who would want to Spam the group for commercial purposes. Providing you speak a second European Language to a conversational standard, then you very welcome to join. Please do use your real name when registering.

2. Origins
Thames EuroClub was formed in 1997 as a spin-off of the London Euroclub by a small, but enthusiastic, group of people in the Thames Valley area. Other EuroClubs have also developed in Oxfordshire and Hampshire.

Thames EuroClub is a non-commercial language club run by and for its members.

3. What are the aims of the Thames EuroClub?
The aim of Thames EuroClub is to encourage learning and understanding of other languages and cultures. We do however expect members to be able to speak a European language to at least a conversational standard.

Events are scheduled usually in Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham, Maidenhead, Marlow, Slough, Windsor and Newbury and more recently in Basingstoke and High Wycombe. We occasionally have events in London, or even further afield.

Typically we have native speakers at all the multi-lingual events, one of who "host" will the event. However, these are not classes, they are opportunities to practice. Sometimes we find a quiet bar or cafe for a little conversation, sometimes we're out walking in the beautiful Thames Valley countryside, or you could be joining us for a little tapas or goulash. We like to keep the activities, locations and timing as diverse as possible, so as not to "exclude" anyone's preferences or availability.

Additionally we are very proud of the social events where all of the club can come together such as the Summer and Christmas parties.

Thames EuroClub is not about learning a language, it's better to do that in a structured form at evening classes. However the club is very useful to practise a language once it's reached a standard.

4. Events

At Thames EuroClub, we have:

  • Informal conversation evenings in French, German, Italian and Spanish.
  • Monthly English Language Social and Networking get togethers, which are useful for non-native speakers.
  • Film evenings at The Reading Film Theatre and at members homes.
  • Meals Out
  • Summer and Winter Parties
  • Cycling and Walking in and around Berkshire
  • Outings to language based events of interest to the club

If you are interested in organising an event then speak to one of the Team Members.

5. Membership

There are some 180 Members. Languages spoken by our members include French, German, Italian, Spanish, Slovak, Russian, Arabic, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Czech, Finnish ...and not forgetting English!

The £10 membership fee is used to cover the administration of the club. Any excess funds are used to subsidise special events such as the Summer or Winter Parties and also to help pay for snacks when an event is held at a member's home.

So come along to a couple of events and meet some of the hosts and some of the members. Once you have done that and want to join the club then just complete the Membership Application form which is on the files page

6. Team Members

The club is run by its members and a Team is elected each year to plan and coordinate activities. Click on the title to see the team roles in the club. Feel free to contact any of us if you have a question.
