Scoot-away Weekend: Laughlin, Nevada!

Updated: 2/10/13

Our first Laughlin adventure has been suggested by Nina. Laughlin was purchased by Don Laughlin in 1964 and the rest is history. There are 60 restaurants 2 museums, 34 lane bowling alley, many shops and spas, water sports and gambling. Thanks go out to Keith and Elaine who will be pulling a trailer and providing ride support. The route has been carefully planned on the safest highways and with plenty of stops. Freeway will be avoided as a general rule. Any exceptions will be duly noted. Typical segment ride time: 1 hr. 15 mins.

Ride Rating: Advanced - Suitable for experienced riders only. This will be a long day of riding with long sections at sustained highway speeds. Make sure you and your scooter are in top condition for this ride. It is strongly suggested that you bring an extra gas container just in case.

Day 1 - Friday
Route updated[masked]: http://goo.gl/maps/3ZDTh

Day 2 - Saturday: Ride to Oatman, Arizona (30 miles on Route 66)
Route updated[masked]: http://goo.gl/maps/KxmdI

  • A: Tropicana Laughlin Hotel, 2121 S Casino Dr, Laughlin, NV - KSU at 10am.

Oatman is a former mining town on the Black Mountains of Mohave County Arizonia (2700 ft). The town was named after Olive Oatman, a girl kidnapped by Yavapai Indians and traded to the Mohave Indians. They adopted her as their daughter, she was released in 1855 near the site of the current town. Today the town is an authentic old western town, with wild burros roaming about , which can be hand fed, They are descendants from the original burros released by miners. Things to see are the Oatman Hotel where Clark Gable & Carol Lombard honeymooned after their wedding in Kingman in 1939. There are gunfights in the streets as well as shops with hand made leather goods and Indian crafts.

Day 3 - Sunday: Ride home

We'll go back the way we came. KSU: 9am

    The huge thanks to everybody who came out and made this ride possible. Special thanks go out to Mrs Big Money and Keith for pulling the trailer so that the rest of us can enjoy the ride with a little bit more peace of mind. I had a wonderful time with Yall. It's Tuesday and I'm still in a good mood :-D

    @Cat I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. To me, a trip like this out on the open road is a metaphor for life's journey: Ups and downs but worth the ride, especially when you share the ride with friends and family. I'm glad you rode this weekend :-)

    I really enjoyed my time with all of you this weekend. I had seriously thought of dropping out, when my ex husband (father of my 4 sons)passed away Thursday night. BUT my sons said this ride was the perfect thing I needed to give me lots of time to process. SO, go I did!!! Thanks to all of you for distracting me and giving me lots of times to laugh! I learned a few additions to rules I should make to my own scooter group (I know, I know...no one but me rides but someday they will come!). Now I also saw/learned a lot more about some of you than I probably needed...BUT I sure had a damn good time!

    *** Day 1 route update 2/28 *** Previously, on step 19, we were to take Johnson Ln about 2.7 miles to Malki Rd. Today, I discovered that part of Johnson is actually gravel road. So, instead we're going to continue on Ramsey(step 17) and take the long onramp onto the I10 fwy for this section. The actual freeway part is only about 1 mile long. This is the best way through this section. Please review the updated map and let me know if you have questions. Sorry about the late change.

    * earplugs - for the ride and the hotel.
    * vitamin C - I've been home sick all week. I'll be dammed if I'm sick for the ride!

    ***Route update*** Day 1 route between Tipton (step #29) and waypoint C has been changed as follows: In order to avoid going out of our way on Hwy 111, we'll jump on the 10 fwy just after Whitewater Cutoff. We'll be on the 10 fwy for just 2.1 miles to CA62 (29 Palms Hwy). From CA62, We'll take the Dillon Rd exit. Also, Waypoint C will be moved to the intersection of Dillon Rd and Indian Canyon Dr. Please have a look at the update map and let me know if you have questions.

    February 10, 2013

    • Cat M

      No problemo. Instead of waiting at I-10 and N Indian Canyon, I shall wait on the corner of N Indian Canyon and Dillon. :) Just ride by me and I will jump in the end of the line!

    **Radio info**: Kieth and I use Chatterbox X1 Slim radios on our rides. Usually, we are on channel 9, subchannel 09 (spells out "909" in the display).

    For Laughlin, Keith will be driving and not using his chatterbox. So this time, we'll all be on channel 6, subchannel 0, so that Nina and anyone else can communicate with their handheld radios. I've tested with my Chatterbox and Nina's Midland GXT 1000/1500, but other FRS/GMRS radios should also work. Thanks to Keith for helping me to get this going!

    Chatterbox Settings
    ---------------------
    * Channel: 6 (FRS). Note: Ch 1 - 7(FRS) also work.
    * Subchannel: 0 <- very important! Midland GXT 1000/1500 Settings
    ---------------------
    * Channel: 6 (GMRS). Note: Ch 1 - 7(GMRS) also work.
    * Group Mode: OFF
    * Privacy: OFF
    * Power Mode: High (this probably doesn't matter)

    We may switch channels as needed. Odd how the only range that works is with Chatterbox on FRS and Midland on GMRS. Go figure.

    February 18, 2013

    • Nina T

      I'm all set with the radios, if others have a 1000GTX use whisper mode if connecting to a mic.

    Great effort David - Looking at the day 2 route = If we have time & feel like a little longer ride on the way back to the hotels we could try staying on Oatman Topock Hwy for a ways. It looks nice & twisty = we could try it for a few miles to see if we like it... ...<*>...

    I've updated the Day 1 map, segment F-G: Instead of 95N to 163E, We'll take 95 South to the I-40E to Needles Hwy. Please note that this will be about 6 miles of freeway, but it is overall a safer route for this segment. We'll ride in "max safety freeway formation mode" on this segment of I-40 with stop before and after the six-mile freeway part.
