Skid Row

I will be leaving with Jennifer Sunday at 1:00pm with all the gear.

If asked who you are here to see, answer LoveLA

Important: Do not under any circumstance give anyone any money. You will be asked by the street people.

George Selman is a retired fashion photographer. He is well known in the industry and after retirement, he began pastoring to the homeless and those with so little hope in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles. On 3rd Sundays, Pastor George ministers for Love LA, a Korean church that converts a parking lot into a community service center. With their help, we are going to setup and capture portraiture of the residents of Skid Row.

I believe it is important to give and I want to bless them with a simple gift or photograph of themselves. It is possible that some of these folks have never had a picture of themselves.

We will set up three 8x8 awnings. Two together for the shooting area, another with table for the PC/Printer. The backdrop will be suspended from the back and our guests will stand in the second shade (creating a distance from the background). The awning will be white and allow soft light to illuminate our guests. We will also add lighting. We will shoot from one camera that is tether to a laptop and print directly. Our guests will receive a 4x6 color print.

I need three volunteers to help with the portraiture setup and execution. I desire others to be photographing around the area. I am capping this event to seven and asking for $20 per volunteer/photographer to help with supplies. I am not sure of the volume of photographs that will be given away, but want to be prepared to give away as many as possible.

We will shoot tethered, my camera but with different shooters. Being tether to my laptop, and lightroom. Image comes in to LR and someone selects the best of let’s say three images, select, crop and print. We will shoot lower quality (not 36 megapixel) and jpg. so, the transferring to pc and printer can be faster. We do not want to have our guests waiting and standing around.

If you desire your own images, bring a SD or CF memory card. You can insert it into my camera and be able to keep your images.

The parking lot where the ministry/shoot will take place is behind the Union Rescue Mission.  We will park at the mission under ground.

545 S San Pedro St

Los Angeles, CA 90013

Once parked, we will be escorted through URM to the location on San Julian Street between 5th and 6th.

Doug, Yesterday was an amazing experience. Seeing faces that were grimacing when walking up to the photo station and THEN watching their faces light up when seeing their photos on screen ... and then walking away with their very own print ... the pride they had. Wow. AWESOME!

You and Jennifer were beasts with the equipment, the set-up, dealing with all the personality types and doing it all with grace and dignity.

    You both ROCK!

Will we be able to use our own card as we shoot tethered? Then we can download them to your computer but keep the images?

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
