Bath's New Underground Rail Network (pub crawl)

Just wanted to clarify: although this is a 'pub crawl' there's no pressure to drink alcohol. I'm not.

Itinerary

---------

Meet 8pm in Lambretta's, BA24AL, at the end of the Northern Line. (That's the black one for you non-Londoners). From there we have the whole of the Northern Line to sample. Or we can interchange.

Unlike London Underground, we will not be staying stationary without explanation for long periods of time. The idea is to move along the line quickly, and to occupy all the available space. One inside a pub, do not block the doors. And if there's someone less able to stand than yourself please give up your seat. (Actually, scratch that last one -it's out of fashion.)

Background

As you might be aware, there are plans to build an underground rail network in Bath and surrounding areas, along the lines of London Underground.

I went down to the council offices this week and picked up a map of the proposed lines. In order to help you get an idea of where the lines might run, all the local pubs are listed. You might like to see where your nearest stop might be.

I've blown up Zone One below.

And here is Trowbridge, which basically sits at the end of the Central Line:

Convenient or what?

Anyway, I suggest that we make a start on getting to grips with the new network by sampling the pubs on a particular line. Suggestions?

I'm on the Hammersmith & City line / Jubilee Line, but obviously we could go anywhere.

For ease of reference, here are the line names:

Thanks for your comments everyone, it was an enjoyable night. Must admit, I was at one point concerned that a physical interface situation (that's a fight, to you) was was about to kick off with the petulant skinhead, but fortunately not.

Fun relaxed evening going to some bars that I don't normally frequent. Gave lambretta's a 1 * for having no beer left after the rugby and being a bit of a dive. Great to see the Wiltshire group out in such numbers - hope the back improved Elsa. Thanks Richard for organising and then re-arranging, and for keeping us all on track !!

Orsolya...thanks, maybe too creative! Although even I'm ambivalent about doing this tonight (had a few late nights recently) so I've shifted it to the new year.

    • Richard

Hi Becks. Yes, I'll put up an itinerary shortly. I'll try to select a finish near the station. Whatever, it's going to be fairly chilled though, as we have the walk on Sunday. No 2am Tequila slammers.

There are a few stops on the Northern Line that I've not been to, but anywhere in zone 1 looks pretty interesting

    November 10, 2013

  • Yvonne

Hello, is this happening? I would preferably opt for zone 1.

    November 9, 2013

  • Nick M.

Yes, sounds interesting. I am assuming it will be in Zone 1?
Look forward to finding out details of when and where.

Curses. Would have thoroughly enjoyed this. Not least as i am a serving railwayperson. Will keep an eye out for the next one. Or possibly we might play pub golf one time

Sounds very interesting. A tentative yes from me depending on which route is chosen.

Ha ha!! Brilliant one Laurence, I thought you being an expert on trains would of been able to advise me which ones accommodate wheelbarrows? :-)

      October 22, 2013

    • Laurence B.

Well I am currently lobbying the construction team to include a facility for wheelbarrows on all trains on behalf of 'TWO FENS' (Totally Wasted On A Friday Evening/Night Society). ;-)

If they keep expanding Keynsham we'll need our own metro system!

    October 22, 2013

  • J

having read this I am now worried about Zone 1 - ha ha :0)

    October 22, 2013

  • Laurence B.

I understand that the HS2 Phase One line of route between London and the West Midlands has now been cancelled to facilitate this project.
As a fan of both beer and of train tunnels, I welcome this decision which now enables a combination of a few of my favourite things --when the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad (mad?)------------------------------- get my coat!

Great news .. I've also heard that Weatherspoons are offering a special deal .. 'Park, Pie 'n Pin't, which I believe is a zone one pass with their meal deal offer. Excellent way to get home afters .....
