The Bay Area Clojure User Group Monthly Meetup

  • Mar 1, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

March is Macros Month!

Arthur Ulfeldt will give a brief beginners guide to getting started with macros, based around mocking for tests, and then Tom Faulhaber will follow-up on more intermediate macro usage. Other attendees will be able to answer more advanced questions and show more advanced usage.

We're also hoping to hook up with Seajure by video conference, since they meet the same night as us and are also hosted by The Climate Corporation. If that all works, we'll also have a short preso from Phil Hagelberg about what's coming in Leiningen 2.

    Thanks, Tom!

As requested, I have posted my examples of "how you would invent macros if you didn't have them" that I presented in the last meetup: https://gist.github.com/1998992. I hope some of you find this helpful in your exploration of macros.

It was really cool to do the teleconference link with the Seattle group and to hear about upcoming work from the main developers there.

Thanx Tom - that would be great!

Sean/Arthur - I'm happy to take step two of macros to a least take things one more level.

Sorry for the delayed response, I'm interested in covering what macroes are well enough that someone just hearing about them will understand why you can't pass a macro the map function. I don't think I'm the best one to cover symbol capture or the other ways macros go wrong... Would you enjoy covering the hard stuff

I'm very interested in this, but due to a family obligation I won't be able to attend. Is there any chance someone can record video of the proceedings?

Thanx Arthur! I get the impression that the we have more folks in the "novice" group who'd benefit from that level than in the use of macros for DSLs. I think our ClojureScript coverage last month was interesting but was not aimed at beginners. We need to make sure we cover all our constituents!

as I volunteered last month I'm happy to cover the beginner side in 15 min so that the rest of the discussion will be accessible to all. I would like to target people who are learning clojure, NEED to understand what macros are, and WANT to write simple ones. My Examples will be using macros to mock things for testing

I'd be willing to talk. I wrote Scriptjure, a clojure to javascript DSL years before clojurescript came out. https://github.com/arohner/scriptjure

I wouldn't be able to present, but I'd be an enthusiastic audience member for a presentation on macros.
