Launch party, networking and social

We are officially launching The Brightoneers with an evening of networking and fun.

It will be perhaps the largest gathering ever of people who want to create a better economy for the benefit of everyone - now and future generations - in Brighton. I hope it will be an evening we'll all remember as the start of the Brightoneers movement to make this new economy happen. I'm really excited about meeting you all, and the connections, collaborations and projects that might come out of the evening.

This first event is an informal one. It's simply about conversations over a few drinks. The goal is to get everyone talking about what a pioneering new economy in Brighton means and then kick off real activities.

Come along if you:

- are curious about what The Brightoneers is

- have an idea for a new project or business

- are looking for or offering help to others

- want to meet like-minded people who care about making life in the city better for everyone

All are very welcome. Only rule is don't be salesy :)

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Dave & Tom.

haha sorry Steve, for some reason I confused you with Lawrence McCahill! It's not even as if the names are similar! I am equally excited about your undiscussables project :)

Great to gather an interesting, likeminded crowd of change-makers. This now needs some structure and focus to really turn this great social energy into action that will make a difference.

Hi, great to meet some of you last night, there was a lot of really exciting, positive people making change, which was fantastic to see. There was a lot of interest in crowd funding, in particular a space to bring together "Brightoneer's Project's" This could really help shine a spotlight on what is going on and let the world see that we mean business. Anyone else interested in meeting up to discuss how this might work?

Hi All - I am interested in a follow up meeting on co-ops as am a founder of Brighton Energy Co-op. Also I am a Director of the Eco Technology Show on 14/15th June at Brighton Centre and we are encouraging envionmental/social/digital initiatives to run events that same w/e, either as part of the Show in the Centre or as a fringe event signposted on the www.ecotechnologyshow.co.uk website. Examples are the big EVent which will be a day focussed on electric vehicles and a Wired for Change 'energy hackathon' with Forum for the Future. So if you are interested in finding out more about the Show, running a Brightoneer event at the Show or have fringe event suggestions please get in touch on [masked].

WAs looking forward to the MeetUp last night, but, sadly had to leave as the noise levels were impossible. I couldn't hear myself think, so responding coherently while shouting was going to be difficult.

Now the informal 'bonding experience' has happend, would suggest holding sometihng morre focussed, using a World/KnowledgeCafe or Appreciative Enquiry session, to explore eg cooperatives in Brighton in more depth, share knowledge already deeply embedded within the Brighton/Hove community. There's a long history of cooperation going back to the 19th C, altho' it usually begins in 1844 with the Rochdale Pioneers. In fact the Brighton Co-operative Benevolent Fund and the Brighton Co-operative Trading Association were set up in 1826/7; Dr William King & local publication, The Co-operator would have been known in Rochdale. A good tradition to tap into, which seems to be where thoughts are moving. Only, next time, more structure, less noise!!

Awesome!! I really agree and so I'll just say again that I'd love you guys and anyone else to take the lead on things as much as you'd like to. I'm here to help and will also get out of the way when needed :)

This outcome has shown the night to be a success. I look forward to many more opportunities to meet and discuss and increase my knowledge on social enterprise, cooperatives, the sharing economy and so much more.

Hi Sven, I didn't get a chance to meet you, but I thought I'd chip in with an idea.

I understand there's something called the New City Deal which will give the council the ability to offer reduced business rates to sectors they wish to encourage. On the basis that co-ops don't haemorrhage money out of the city through corporate profits, I think they would be a great candidate for reduced business rates....

    January 25, 2013

    • sven r.

Thanks for that. It's something I've already started discussions about. There's an Economic Strategy refresh going on in the council at the moment, and its a good time to work on that to get more co-op stuff in there. That was one idea. There are others.

It’s really important to create the right environment for co-ops to be able to start and grow, but the biggest difference will come when co-ops work together. Thanks for your interest. Chat next time…?

      January 25, 2013

    • Benita

Happy to share insights on the Sharing Economy generally too :)

      January 25, 2013

  • sven r.

Great evening out, so many people! Had a chance to chat with a good few of you, but too few. What's next? That's up to us...

So here's what a few of us were talking about tonight - a co-op focused meet up similar to tonight. But just co-ops, or people interested in co-ops and co-op development. There's huge potential for co-ops in the city to work closer together, help each other grow, invest in and support new co-op start ups etc. But right now, there's a lot of co-ops out there ploughing a lone furrow - quite successfully, but what more could be done if we, erm, co-operate with each other. Let us know if you are interested in this, and we’ll try to sort a meet-up soon.

    1 · January 24, 2013

    • sven r.

For sure, it was great meeting up with folk outside my normal circle, and I'm sure that will happen again. I guess the idea I put forward up there is that there are some co-op specific issues that can be developed alongside the Brightoneers theme, but not as an alternative to it.

While Brightoneers is still emerging, and becomes whatever its members want it to become, I think that the people that meet up through it will still want to go off and work up ideas outside that setting. One of the core ideas of co-ops is ‘Co-operation amongst co-operatives’ and that’s not really happening yet in Brighton. There was a meeting a few years back where some co-ops and co-operators came together and identified this sort of meeting as a missing part of the local co-op economy, and last night could be seen as a springboard for that need being met. Interesting to think about how it applies to employee owned but not co-ops businesses…

I'm really interested in this so count me in!

  • Tom N.

A big thank you to everyone for coming, I met some awesome new folks as well as familiar faces. Apologies for the loud live music that made conversation difficult from half way through - the venue hadn't warned me about this! Anyway, there's a huge amount of good stuff going on which we need to build on and multiply a thousand fold to make a better, new economy a reality. I think a more structured meetup around coops will be next, but if anyone has other ideas, The Brightoneers is your community too so give me a shout if you want to organise something else. Let's make stuff happen, people!

Great to see so many people attend. Like a Sex Pistols gig, let's hope it becomes necessary in future for people to want to claim 'I was there that night'.

    1 · January 25, 2013

  • sven r.

Brilliant to see so many people out. The only thing that stopped it getting 5 stars for me was that I would have liked to have known a little more about the people there and their main motivation for attending. Can find that out by chatting, but as much as I did that, I was always wondering - is there someone here I NEED to talk to but don't know about. Great stuff though

Awesome effort and turnout Tom. An inspiring night and the perfect forum for pulling together the aspects of the more interesting and leading edge business community that perhaps does not already have a natural fit in the more traditional events elsewhere. I was surrounded with people who fit my values and who I felt well aligned with. It's top of my calender (next to Conscious Business events of course) and I really look forward to where this goes. Thanks for pulling this community together. Excellent!

Will there be any speakers to introduce the concept? Hope so!

    January 24, 2013

    • Tom N.

Sorry you're not coming Andy. I'm sure there will be more structured events in the future which perhaps you'll enjoy. The goal for tonight is to get people who share a vision for creating a new economy to meet each other. The community - and that includes you - can decide what happens next.

      January 24, 2013

    • Annie H.

yes I totally get what you are saying and i am glad that the feedback has prompted Tom to think he will give a bit of an intro. I've been at those meetings you describe where everyone who knows each other sits on another table..not realising...and verily they do suck. Come and say hi to me and my friend Karen, I'll bore you with tales of my holiday but Karen's cool! She combines scrutiny with punk rock, how many people can say that eh?

    Hello folks.

In a similar vein to the fantastic Exeter Street Hall, anyone who has been meaning to buy their shares in The Bevy, please take the 2 mins now. http://www.thebevy.co.uk I'm just saying now as we don't want to be salesy tonight.

Warren and myself will be there to let people know more about The Bevy, and to learn what other people are doing.

Realy looking forward to it :-)))

    2 · January 24, 2013

  • Iain C.

    Hi Tom
I know it's not a 'salesy' evening but is it ok to bring along some prospectuses (prospecti?) for the Hall? The church just dropped their price by £50k following our lobbying & so we have every chance of success but need to raise another £10k fast. I am happy to talk to people one to one, but ultimately we are a legal entity and people need to read that prospectus before investing. As such it would be handy if I had some with me.

    1 · January 24, 2013

    • Graham L.

Seconded. Also, you can buy shares as a group (up to 4 people) if you want to split the cost a bit... #micronetworkcrowdfunding

Looking forward to tonight and also to others who know about co-ops. Mine's (http://drop.coop) a little different than those mentioned already. I've recently launched a coop for people who work with the Free/Libre Open Source Web Framework Drupal. After a year as a community-elected Director of the Drupal Association which is a 401(c)3 Educational Nonprofit I believe the coop approach will help me more as a small business than having to join supply chains etc.
