Kayak camp Capers Island

(first Meetup so any help is appreciated)

I would like to paddle from Isle of Palms Marina for two nights on Capers Island. Leave - noon Thursday, March 14, camp two nights, return the morning of Saturday, March 16. I have a permit From DNR for 8 but would be comfortable making the trip if two others sign on.

This is a new trip for me, but it looks pretty straight forward. It is a 5-6 mile paddle north with an option to stay in the protected creeks or head out to the Atlantic side if conditions permit. Participants will be responsible for boat, saftety gear, camping gear, food and water. Parking at Marina is $5/night if vehicle has no trailer, $10 with trailer.

Activities once at Capers may include fishing, surfing, exploring on and around island. I would like to make a "go, no go" decision on Monday, March 11th based on 5-day weather forcast. Maybe some local paddlers can help me here, but I would not recommend this for first time paddlers.

There may be tidal currents, wind and waves to deal with at some point during the trip. Even with the best laid plans, conditions can change. I would think beginners with the proper equipment and a few local paddles behind them, would be ok.

I went ahead and did a solo trip to Capers and enjoyed it a lot. I camped near the south end where the boneyard beach starts. It was a bit cool Thursday night, but my sleeping bag was up to it. I planned the tide to be with me going up on Thursday and back on Saturday. That worked out fine but the wind was against me on both trips. Pretty strong from the SW on Saturday morning. No rest for the weary. I had all day on the island on Friday. I messed around during the morning and then paddled north along the beach, through the cut between Capers and Bulls Island. Then I paddled back to the ICW and finished up paddling around Capers to my camp site. Finally caught a couple surf waves before landing to cook supper.

I was alone Thursday night, but Friday night there were two other groups camping - three guys rode out by motor boat and a husband and wife (believe it or not in that wind) paddled out in a tandem open canoe.

Hope to paddle with you soon.

Ok gang, Long range weather for Thursday thru Saturday (March 14-16) - temps mid 60's, sunshine and wind less than 10. This could be one of those weekends you wish you were paddling. With these mild conditions, I've decided to make the trip even if it is solo (but I sure would love some company). I'll be at the IOP marina boat ramp by 11am, planning to leave with the outgoing tide by 12:30 pm. If there are any last minute joiners, please email me by 11:00 PM on Wednesday night. I'll be leaving Macon, GA for Charleston at 5 am Thursday morning. If you want to join up at the last minute, I'm driving a gold Toyota Tundra, paddling a yellow over white Impex.

Hope to meet you this trip or next.

This is Mark. If you have not made this trip before and want to see what it might be like, go to UTube and type in "Capers Island". You can watch several videos that show Capers Island and what the paddling and camping experience is like there.
