That's actually a very tricky word when you just hear it

There are many words that sounds exactly the same but are written differently

Paix (peace) from pax in latin so it has an X at the end

but you also have

Paie (or "paye" = salary) from the verb "payer" / to pay (same pronunciation)
Pet (= fart), from "petard = firecracker"

Many different meanings as you can see...



So be careful in using it! Jean-Christophe Lecocq gave us this great info and cautions :)
