International Grandmaster Ron Henley is an experienced world class chess trainer, chess writer, producer of chess videos, and is involved in financial trading funds. Henley was Chief Trainer for the Eleventh World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov for nine World Championship matches. Early in their careers, GM Henley worked with and sponsored World #7 and two-time US Champion Hikaru Nakamura and three time US Women’s Champion Irina Krush. GM Henley also trained eight times scholastic national champion Daniel Edelman. Henley is an award winning chess author and producer of more than 60 chess videos. He is a regular contributor to OnlineChessLessons.NET and annual guest Grandmaster Lecturer at the National Open in Las Vegas.
In his own playing career, Henley was awarded the International Master title in 1980, and the International Grandmaster title in 1982. He won the GM title by winning a 26-player round-robin grandmaster super-tournament in Surakarta, Denpasar, Indonesia, defeating Grandmaster Tony Miles in the last round.
Henley received the first chess scholarship in America to attend University of South Florida. In 1976, the USF Chess team won the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship with a perfect 8-0 team score. In 1977, Henley won the Association of College Unions National Individual Championship. GM Henley has won the World Open and the Board Two gold medal at the World Youth Team Championships. He has won international chess tournaments in Indonesia, Columbia and Switzerland.
From 1985 thru 2001, Mr. Henley was an American Stock Exchange Member as a trader, market maker and specialist. In 2010, he was appointed by Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov as President of the World Champions Council, a New York State Not-for Profit entity which promotes chess in the schools.
