Hackerspace Brainstorm

Hi Group -

Unfortunately, no one stepped forward to lead a discussion for Tuesday night, so I have a few discussion topics that I'd really like your feedback on tomorrow night in-person. Please give some time tonight or over lunch tomorrow to these important topics, and be prepared to discuss.

1. Hackerspace. I would be really interested in helping spearhead a Hackerspace here in Colorado Springs, but I'd like to brainstorm how this group can be involved. Everything from a funding model to the equipment we could pony up are topics on the table.

2. Group Project. I've also been giving thought to what we could produce, build, design, contribute, etc. as a group. Is there a project you'd love to work on but do not have the time or money? Can we somehow spawn a product development cycle or a Kickstarter? We have a large enough group with enough variety in our backgrounds to do something truly special. What can we build together?

3. Speaker Lineup. I'd like to get solid commitments out of three people to lead discussions the next three months. I'm willing to lead a Verilog,[masked], Advanced Eagle, BLE112 Bluetooth Low Energy Radio Hacking, RabbitCore, or iOS App Development session if that's at all interesting. What are you willing to lead and discuss? We're after deep dive technical, but that doesn't necessarily imply onerous slide sets. If you have code to share, experiences to discuss, etc., we'd love to have you up front sharing this so we can all bootstrap together.

Tomorrow night may not have a speaking topic, but these discussions are critical to the life of the group. I look forward to seeing what comes of it tomorrow!

A "Hackerspace" is essentially a lab that contains test and measurement equipment, prototyping equipment, mechanical gear, etc. - all the stuff needed to build and prototype technology. The basic issue is that all of us want a 3D printer, a CNC Machine, etc, but cost prohibits all of us from buying these items as individuals. So, instead, the idea is to pool what you have into a common area, share the equipment, collect a fee to help with maintenance and perhaps hire a technician, and then come to the Hackerspace when you need to build something and do not have the tools in your home shop or lab. This could even include DevKits, Arduino Boards, Android/iOS Test Devices, etc.

    Sound good?
