Tell us a little about what you write...

I've been reading science fiction and fantasy since I first learned to read, and write what I would love to read. I'm a novelist at heart. I never mastered the art of writing the short story, although I enjoy reading them. As a busy mother and homemaker I was a secret writer, posting several successful novel-length fanfics online under a pseudonym I cannot be persuaded to share. Currently I have two unfinished original novels languishing in a file and another that is demanding to be finished, all of them belonging, to various degrees, in the genre of fantasy.

Tell us a little about your personal experience with writers' critique groups...

I'm a great believer in positive, supportive feedback. Writing - creative outpouring of any kind, in fact - is hard enough without making it a competitive sport. I believe that good crit is 1. only given when asked for, and 2. specific to the concerns of the person who asked. I've done a lot of editing for friends and fellow fanfic writers. When asked, I've taught young ones how to be original and say what they mean, taught mature first-time writers to craft pretty decent action scenes, and edited hundreds of pages of stories of all skill levels, and I think I've managed to do it in a warm and positive way. Most of my experience with crit groups has been either in workshops or with virtual groups online. I am hoping to find a group of real live people love writing, who love other writers for the sheer fact of their courage and imagination, and whose intention in coming together is to support the creative act with their experience, insight, goodwill and bonhomie.

Retired homemaker now free from those relentless responsibilities with a lot more time to read and write. Moved to the Newburgh area two years ago with NYC commuter hubby for the peace and quiet and a two-acre garden. Love it here.
