Responding to the Responsive Web: Insights on Reshaping User Experience

After our rest-filled spring break, the Digital Pond is back in action and we are hitting the ground running with our next event. After feedback from many Ponderers we have decided to revisit the theme of responsive web design.

Free Networking & Keynote Speech Event

2013 was the Year of Responsive Web Design, according to Mashable. More people than ever are visiting websites from mobile devices—recent estimates say as many as 40%. It’s also easier than ever to accommodate mobile visitors, but how can we go even further and make sure they’re getting the best possible user experience?

At this summer’s edition of the Digital Pond, we’ll hear professionals share their experiences with responsive web design, their knowledge of current best practices, and their predictions for the future. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the experts and network with lots of likeminded people.

Speakers:

Jeremy Keith (@adactio) lives in Brighton where he serves as Rear Admiral of the Responsive Fleet at design agency Clearleft. He’s the curator of the dConstruct conference as well as Responsive Day Out, and he organised the world’s first Science Hack Day. Jeremy has written three books about JavaScript and HTML5.

Sally Jenkinson (@sjenkinson) is a freelance technical consultant based in Colchester. She has worked with a range of brands and digital agencies on projects for clients including Nokia, Electronic Arts, BT, and UTV. Sally aims to get people talking and thinking about technology in a creative way, and to use it to improve user experiences.

Schedule:

18:00 – Networking, snacks and free bar

18:30 – Sally Jenkinson, Technical Consultant

19:00 – Jeremy Keith, Founder & Technical Director at Clearleft

19:30 – Q+A and networking

Who should attend?

This event is for anyone looking to learn more about usability, user experience (UX) and design—particularly in the context of the responsive web. Even if you are not a designer, you will still come away having learned about some of the most important concepts when it comes to web production and project management.

If you are involved in the process of designing, building or conceiving a new web project, you do not want to miss this.

      Hi Yama, Thursday 4th Sept

  • Marc G.

My first meetup ever, glad it was this group. Great presentations, raised lots of ideas and expansive thinking that resonate still, all important for those necessary and regular mindset shifts touched on. It even uncovered some long buried past like 'Killer Sites' (let alone Shockwave Director) to remind me how far we have come and how everything changes constantly and so we need our minds to do so also (thank God for better search, online connections and online/offline meetups these days). Many thanks and look forward to more (will linger more for chatting next time if not sleep-deprived).

What was that responsive article/book Jeremy was talking about? Daw?

Very useful introductions and a refreshing and forthright position on responsiveness. Although raised more questions in my mind -- not least about context of use. Plus I think there is more to be said about ethics too -- especially when I see it as the designers job to do their best for those they are designing for: their clients (and implied, their chosen audiences too). To also insist that we must design for everyone else is questionable. I'd like to see that theme explored more in a future debate!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
