The Edinburgh Photography Meetup Group

Start at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle and end with drinks at the Café at Holyrood Palace. Everything we shoot stays on the Mile itself. Side streets and closes are fair game, but shoot from the Mile looking down them — don’t follow them in.

The Fringe turns the Royal Mile into one of the most photographed streets in the world for three weeks a year. Your challenge is to find something in it that doesn’t look like everyone else’s shot. The performers, the crowds, the chaos — it’s all there. Look for the edges of it: the performer between acts, the audience member who isn’t watching, the poster peeling in the rain. (Though let's hope it stays dry.)

This week: everything the Mile has to offer, especially (but not only) the festival.

Where we’ll meet: 1.00pm Edinburgh Castle entrance — or the car park entrance if access to the Castle gate isn’t possible.

Where we’ll finish: 2.30pm Drinks at the Café at Holyrood Palace.

Did you wear a traffic cone hat during the World Cup? We are feeling the pull west to visit our friends in Glasgow once again. We are hoping that some of the Southside Snappers will be free to join us as we explore the city centre.

You will need to make your own way to Glasgow, we will meet at the main door to the Queen Street Station, the one facing George Square at 1pm.

Aimed in particular at those who will be exhibiting photographs at Edinburgh Photographic Society as part of Project 26 this photo mounting practical session will be open to all. Amanda and Pete will bring along the photo prints that exhibitors have printed via A and M and will also bring along any mounts ordered by those Project 26 exhibitors who have ordered mounts. All others wishing to join in should bring along mounts and photos

Today's photography challenge is to take street photographs inspired by Saul Leiter (https://lulamag.jp/wp/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/sl0703002.jpg).

Saul was a street photographer, based in New York with a very distinctive style. He made use of bold colours, often photographed through (often steamy) windows and mirrors, and regularly used sub-frames as a key part of his composition. Sub-frames might be constructed by something as simple as a window (as shown in the taxi photograph above), by areas of shade and light, reflections in puddles, or by reflections and people seen through windows.

Look out for bold colours, windows, mirrors, areas of deep shade or bright light.
