Black and White- Seascapes

  • Jan 16, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • Various Pick up points- Edinburgh

The plan is to take a trip out to Seacliffe beach near North Berwick to work on Black and White images and also use filters to slow down exposure times and control the light. This will be a full afternoon, finishing around sunset before driving back to Edinburgh.

This will be a car pool event, so we will arrange pick up points etc with a view to meeting up at the Seacliffe car park at 2pm. Sunset is 4:15, so depending on conditions heading back around 4:30pm. Transport costs should be shared- its about 60 miles round trip.

The group now has tripods and filters available for hire for nominal fees, so this will be a good chance to learn how to use them if you have not done so before.

If you are willing to drive, can you please specify a pick up/meeting point and how many passengers you want to take.

Some of us are visiting Seacliffe on tuesday to check the location/ best spots, so we will provide more information on tuesday evening. We will also advise on Wednesday evening if the weather is looking bad and we need to cancel.

Wellies and waterproofs are advisable for this trip and you should wear warm clothing.

Right have added details to images. Can't tell when I was using filter and when not and if so which kind! Need a notebook and pen as well as everything else now!!!!!

  • Andy M.

I agree with May as a learning process it would be beneficial to have the meta date or at least the ISO, SHUTTER SPEED and APERTURE listed with the images posted.

Just have to say I am enjoying looking at all the photos from Seacliff. There is a great variation and it is interesting to see the different treatments! I didn't do it either but I think it would be useful to know how long the exposures were, don't you? I'll go back and do mine during the week.

A great time at a beautiful location with a friendly group. I enjoyed the black and white challenge with, I think, mixed results but really like the effect. Thank you Andy and Malcolm for the organisation and advice. I will definitely go back to the beach.

looking at the weather forecast and tide times for today, looks like you guys are going to have a great time, wish I wasn't trapped in the office!

I really enjoyed trying out something new. All thanks to Malcolm and Andy for their time in preparing and help today. I am uploading some photos as I reckon I won't learn unless I let you see them!! It's the converting to b&w and getting contrasts/exposures right I am falling down on, I think. Will have a practice during the week to get to better grips with the filters. Hard to handle tripod, bags, filter bag, etc esp with freezing hands (yet to sort that). Liking the new Thursday format though! And once again loads of people!

Agreed, May! I'm forcing myself to develop/convert and post the B&W masterpiece!
Yes, seems to be a lot to carry and sort/protect (don't want any of my beloved kit to get damaged or sandy, couldn't find my water bottle, ...) BUT there is one piece of kit I can recommend: 'Easy-Off' gloves - ends of the thumb and first two fingers fold back to expose your finger tips when needed but you don't have to take your glove off!

Just to sum up because there had been some confusing including my mistakes. I am giving a lift to Arthur and Wendy, 1pm Belgrave Crescent and also Chris at 1 15 Easter Road. As I said I may not want to stay until 4 15. I hope it's OK. I know that Arthur gets a lift back from someone else. If there is a problem, please contact me. Thanks.

Directions to the beach from North Berwick

You can see the beach marked on Google maps, just East of North Berwick, but this might help.
Once you drive through North Berwick, take the A198 towards Dunbar. Drive past the golf course and you will see Tantallon castle with its entrance on the LHS. Go straight on past the castle and the road has a sharp left bend. Go round the bend and you will see a sharp right turn ahead. Right on the bend, by some farm buildings (Auldhame) there is a small road/track straight ahead with a very small sign leading to the beach. You will come to a barrier which is working and costs £2 to get past. After this the track is a bit difficult and rutted but passable with care. It takes a few minutes to drive to the car park down the hillside. At the bottom is a grass car park and some toilets. Andy and I will be there about 1:30 to meet people. Any problems, give me a call-[masked]

I am sorry not to be able to offer a lift as I have to get back for babysitting and may have to leave before it is finished. Hoping to go for a bit earlier than 2 to make up for that.

    January 14, 2014

  • Robert J. W.

As no one responded about a lift I'll pull out of the event. Thanks anyway.

    January 14, 2014

    • Malcolm P.

Hi Robert, I put a post up early this afternoon, albeit a general one checking if anyone needed a lift. If you still want to go, I'm leaving at 12:30 (I need to be first there).

      January 14, 2014

  • Malcolm P.

Is everybody fixed for a lift? I'm leaving from the same point as Claudine, but a little earlier at 12:30 to get there first.

    1 · January 14, 2014

    • Arthur S.

Yes, thanks, I'm fixed - see you there! Arthur

      January 14, 2014

    • Wendy

Yes thanks I am getting a lift with Claudine, see you there.

      January 14, 2014

  • Claudine M.

See you then weather permitting, Arthur and Wendy. We have a Renault Scenic kind of purple . We'll wait at the start of Belgrave crescent, at the corner where there is a big church, just after the Dean Bridge. You can't miss it. My husband is coming too so we could take a third passenger if you don't mind squeezing a bit.

    1 · January 11, 2014

    • Arthur S.

Yes, that's great - many thanks. See you there. :)

      January 12, 2014

    • Arthur S.

Claire may be there and, if so, has offered me a lift back to Colinton. But she may not be, in which case I'm still with you! Arthur

      January 13, 2014

  • may c

by the way, it is SEACLIFF. Just thought I'd tell you!

    January 12, 2014

  • Claire C.

I'm giving Muriel a lift to Seacliffe and can't commit to giving lifts there as plans fluid. However, if anyone needs a lift back I can do that. I live in Colinton, Arthur, so maybe this would be easier for you on return.

    1 · January 12, 2014

  • Alison C.

Hi, I live in East Lothian, so is it okay if I meet you at Seacliffe? If there is anyone else local, I have space to take them too. What time do you think you will be there ?
    Thanks A

    January 10, 2014

    • Malcolm P.

      meeting at Seacliffe at 2pm

      January 12, 2014

  • Claudine M.

I live close to Belgrave Crescent, so I could meet there. I could take my car if necessary, 3 passengers. May want to return a bit earlier though which may suit other people too. I am not too happy driving in the dark.

    1 · January 10, 2014

    • Arthur S.

That would suit me, Claudine. I'd take the bus from Colinton to Belgrave Crescent and meet you there.

      January 11, 2014

    • Wendy

Hi claudine that would suit me too, i could walk to yours from haymarket station.

      January 11, 2014

  • Arthur S.

I would appreciate a lift, please. I stay in Colinton near Dreghorn Barracks but could get to Belgrave Crescent or North Berwick by bus.

    January 11, 2014

  • Wendy

Hi, i would love to come but would need a lift, will be getting train through from glasgow so can meet near haymarket or waverley

    January 10, 2014

  • Robert J. W.

Hi I live near the Haymarket. Where can I meet for a lift please? Thanks

    January 10, 2014

  • may c

will rsvp yes but need to get myself there and back without committing to giving lifts as may have to leave to help with children and may not be able to make it in the end. Will clarify later.
