About Us --- The Ethical Humanist Lyceum and Fellowship of Grand Rapids

Welcome Curious “Everyday Philosophers”, Ethical Thinkers, Humanists and ALL “Passionate Moderates”!!!

In an age of cultural and political debates of ever-increasing volatility and polarization, we’re an informal philosophy group focused on learning basic critical thinking principles and skills, as well as on promoting innate ethical humanist ideas and values.

We'll pursue those simple goals while creating a diversity of both educational experiences AND social events for facilitating new friendships---as well as, eventually, inspiring opportunities for cooperative and philanthropic service to the community.

People who might self-identify as ethical humanists, or who at least share many basic humanist moral values, can come from an eclectic mix of philosophical and religious backgrounds and traditions.   From non-religious humanists, religious humanists, skeptics, agnostics, freethinkers, atheists, Objectivists, Unitarian Universalists, Ethical Culture members, libertarian humanists, New-Agers, "spiritual but not religious" folks, pagans, wiccans, Buddhists, Hindus, Bahai-ists, a variety of sociopolitical moderates…...to even liberal adherents of the monotheistic traditions of Judaism and Islam, as well as both liberal Catholic and liberal Protestant Christianity----people of ALL of these more liberal-minded philosophies and traditions (or more liberal "wings" of historically orthodox doctrinal communities) often share certain first principles of an ethical humanist values system.

While defining ethical humanism, AND pointedly critiquing dogmatically-held "ideas that cause harm", we are hoping to build ecumenical bridges of mutual intellectual respect AND new warm-hearted friendships, by maintaining a dignified but invigorating atmosphere of meaningful dialogue---all while focusing on critical thinking itself and commonsense humanitarian ethical ideas and goals.

Besides some informative introductory lectures, future meetings and opportunities for learning and fellowship will hopefully include useful and entertaining debates, small group discussions, topical book clubs, science events, a variety of arts events, coffee/luncheon/dinner dialogues and even community service and philanthropic activities---all kinds of venues for bringing us together in a host of interesting and satisfying ways.

And, of course, all of that will imply there being a multitude of opportunities for many individual members themselves to take organizational and leadership roles in the group’s diverse activities!

The public is welcome to sit in on most meetings.

Membership and attendance at general meetings will usually be free!

(Of course, donations are, if needed, always accepted with gratitude toward helping with webpages fees, meeting room rentals, newspaper advertising, group fliers printing and distribution, and refreshments served during general meetings.)
