FAQs:
How long are the classes?
The classes will last 4 weeks. We will meet Mondays from 6:00-7:00pm
What ages are the classes open to?
We welcome ages 8-12 years old. For all the children, a parent or a guardian is required to remain with the student for the entirety of the course. They will be in a separate room.
Do students have to attend every class?
We expect students to attend all classes unless there is an emergency. There are many students on our waitlist, so please do not sign up if you cannot attend all the classes.
What kind of computer will the students need?
Both Macs and PCs are welcome! Please bring a fully-charged laptop, a mouse and a laptop charger to every class. Please make sure that the laptop is in good working shape so we don't spend the class trying to fix computers when we can be learning.
Any programs/software that need to be installed on the computer? We will be using a web browser, and any will do. in advance you can creat an account on the Scratch website so your child can save their class work: http://scratch.mit.edu
What will the students be learning?
We will be learning the basics of the Scratch language. Throughout the course, students will be building an interactive game.
What is the cost of the class?
FREE. The Iron Yard believes strongly that programming must be accessible at all ages, and kids classes are one way we inch toward making that belief a reality.
Do the students need to know how to touch-type?
No, excellent typing skills are not required. Scratch makes it easy to program with drag-and-drop blocks of code.
What do students need to know before taking the class?
The course is for beginners. Imagination and love for computers are the only requirements for the class.
Are there homework/tests/grades in the class?
Our goal is for students to have a great time learning and playing with new tools and ideas. There are no tests, grades or homework. That said, we do expect students to be engaged in every class. Upon completion of the course, you'll will be receiving a certificate of achievement!
Where can I park? Parking is available at the Underground parking deck adjacent to our building at the corner of MLK and Pryor. Parking is paid hourly and is just $3 after 4pm.
