Join us at The Iron Yard with our Rails Instructor, Rob Isenberg, to learn the basics of Ruby on Rails and find out more about our part-time and full-time courses.
This course assumes no previous knowledge of Ruby on Rails or any other programming language. You will learn the basics of Ruby syntax and logic with a few hands-on exercises. Depending on time, we'll dive into the practical basics, including:
- Basic Ruby syntax
- Basic program design
- Interactive terminal applications
- Logic of writing software
- Choosing data structures
To prepare your laptop for the session, we require that you have a free Nitrous account beforehand. Please follow the below instructions to get your laptop ready.
How to sign up for a free Nitrous account (5 minutes)

Provide a username, email and password and click to "Create New Account"

Nitrous gives a welcome popup, click to "Get Started"

Choose the “Ruby on Rails” Stack Template

You can leave the name

Click “Next”

Choose the Free Plan, and Europe as the location then click “Create”

You will have to verify by entering a UK mobile number and clicking “Save”

An SMS message will be send with a verification code, which you must enter and click “Verify"

Click “Done” - your Ruby on Rails workspace will be created (this may take a minute or two)

Finally, make sure confirm your email address by clicking the link in the email you should have received

That’s it - just remember your email/username and password
