Alison Chaiken (http://www.she-devel.com), founding organizer of the Silicon Valley Automotive Open Source Meetup, and nationally known evangelist for the Automotive Open Source movement, will talk about the ins and outs of participating in Automotive Open Source. You'll get a conceptual overview of the Automotive Open Source ecosystem. You'll learn the nuts and bolts of accessing and including vehicular data in your next application. Also you'll be presented with a variety of real-world demonstrations, on real vehicles, that show off the power of Automotive Open Source.
Presentation
Beyond the Smog Test Connector: Accessing a Car's Behavior Digitally
The "smog test" connector located next to a car's steering wheel provides a wealth of information about your automobile. While the OBDII standard mandates the presentation of emissions and fuel economy data only, Open Source software can detect many more of the operational "parameter IDs" on most vehicles. For example, in conjunction with a GPS and a scan-tool or cheap Arduino-compatible ChipKit single-board computer, programs like nOBDy (https://gitorious.org/nobdy/nobdy) and obdgpslogger (http://icculus.org/obdgpslogger/) can record the traffic pattern of a vehicle. The interfaces these programs have with Bluetooth and TCP encourage the easy sharing of vehicle information with other devices. In the very near future, cars running Open Source applications and pushing anonymized data to the Cloud can and will enable new views of the entire traffic system. Enormous opportunity exists for the Automotive Open Source Community to make significant contributions to the transformation of intelligent automotive transportation.
