The purpose of this group is to discover, explore and understand the natural ressources existing in an urban environment.
During the weekend I teach classes in what I call "Urban Outdoor Skills" and once a month, I take people on a donation-based hike/meeting to explore the city wilderness where we learn about wild edible food, the various uses of plants (medicinal, aromatic, etc...) and how to use nature to become more self-reliant. The hike/Meeting is very informal - we have a mix of experts and novices, this is just a time where we are all students, we just share knowledge about plants and their uses, tips about outdoor skills (such as water purification, tracking, etc...) and self-reliance.
At the end of the hike/meeting, depending on the season, we often create a meal using the plants we collected or sometimes I bring some gourmet food I previously cooked using wild edible plants. Members are welcome to bring their own creation (food or other things).
You are invited to visit my web site for more information:

The group operate on a non-discriminatory basis. The group is open to anyone regardless of race, religion, gender, age, etc...
IF YOU CAN'T ATTEND A MEETUP BECAUSE IT'S ALREADY FULL...
Ugh, it can be frustrating if a meetup is full, mostly if you are interested by the subject but, from my experience, to make a wild food/self reliance hike fun and educational 20 people is usually the limit, mostly if the majority of attendants are novice in that field. I usually spend quite a few hours the day before cooking stuff, getting materials ready, etc...
This may change as people are getting more and more educated or people with more expertise join the group. I can foresee meetups with 30, 40 or more participants in the future.
So what can you do right now is the meetups are already full? Start getting yourself educated on the subject (wild food and self reliance). It takes much more than a few hours to learn wild food or self reliance. You'll also do your part to make future meetups very interesting and a true exchange of knowledge/skills.
There are various ressources in the Los Angeles area and I will keep adding some to this list.
1. Christopher Nyerges. (Pasadena Area)
We are very lucky to have in Los Angeles one of the top expert in Wild Food and Survival Skills. He offers classes weekly. His classes are extremely cheap for the amount of knowledge you gain. Many of his classes are in the $20 range.
Check his web site at:
http://www.christophernyerges.com
and do register for a class. Tell him that Pascal sent you, he'll like that.
2. Jim Lowery (Malibu Creek, Frazier Park)
Jim is an expert in tracking and teaches wild food too. His web site is:
http://www.earthskills.com
3. I guess, there is me left...(Sylmar, Lake View Terrace, Hollywood) until I add more ressources (working on it).
I teach wild food cooking and outdoor/self reliance skills adapted to the urban environment during the weekend. I also have a couple of interesting classes like how to make incenses with wild aromatic plants, making organic soaps with wild plants, etc...My classes are also very cheap.
My web site is: http://www.urbanoutdoorskills.com
So if you can't attend a meetup because it's already full but u're interested by the subject, there are various ressources and it's very affordable.
I look forward to meet you
