The Montgomery County Cooking For Good meetup group started in April 2012 and has prepared over 2,400 meals for the HBCAC shelter since then!
We were recently featured in the media too!
Our primary purpose is to meet once a month to cook a hot dinner for the 75+ residents of the men’s emergency homeless shelter in Rockville run by Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless. The shelter does not have facilities to cook meals -- they have warming and storage ability only. Therefore, they rely exclusively on volunteer groups to provide hot meals to the residents.
Our group will be using our culinary skills to help bring a quality hot meal to the shelter on the first Sunday of each month, and hopefully we’ll all improve our cooking skills as a result. We also host roughly quarterly social get togethers for members to mingle.
Each month the hands of many make what we do possible. If you're available to help with organizing, shopping for ingredients, hosting, or delivering the prepared meal, etc., drop us a line or let one of the organizers know. And thank you.
CULINARY SKILLS REQUIRED:
None! We welcome all ranges of culinary abilities…from professionals to “all I know how to cook is toast, and I usually burn it.” Many of our members are very comfortable in the kitchen and are happy to demonstrate techniques or give cooking tips during our cooking sessions. This is a great way to improve your cooking skills, and you will always have a tested and true recipe so if you like what we cook for the shelter, you will be able to cook it for your friends and family too!
The recipe we're preparing for the month will generally be posted on the event page 3-5 days in advance. Ingredient costs run between $15-20 per person, depending on the number of people who are participating and the particular recipe we’re making that month. This cost is covered by the sign-up fee for Cut & Cook events.
We understand situations may come up at times that prevent you from attending a Cut & Cook meetup event. However, this particular meetup group is a volunteer commitment, as well as a social gathering.
The shelter counts on us to live up to our commitment to provide a hot dinner on the first Sunday of each month, and we count on our members in order to do so. Our cancellation policy is as follows:
-- Please rsvp to a Cut & Cook event when you know you'll be able to participate. Your rsvp is a commitment, not a tentative reservation.
