Announcing a new Meetup for The Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group!

What: Tuesday Evening Hike: Lover's Point to El Estero Park (~ 6 Miles)

When: Tuesday, October 19,[masked]:00 PM

Price: $1.00 per person

Where: Lovers Point Park
625 Ocean View Blvd
Pacific Grove, CA 93950

Since Maria and I will be out of the country on our Himalayan trekking expedition, Marilyn & Susan Smith have graciously volunteered to co-host and lead this after-work / evening hike along Monterey Coastal Recreation Trail between Lover's Point in Pacific Grove to El Estero Park in Monterey, CA. This hike will yield about 6 miles of distance with no appreciable elevation gain. Great power hiking profile!!

El Estero Park was created in 1874 when the Monterey-Salinas Railroad closed a tidal opening to the ocean. Inside the park sits world-famous Dennis the Menace playground ? which opened in 1956 ? with unique playground equipment designed by the late cartoonist Hank Ketcham and sculptor Arch Garner. With a variety of children's play areas, the park became a great success. One of these unique structures is the 1924 locomotive steam engine, donated by the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1986 a thorough renovation of the park was done. The renovation was led by architect Richard Murray and cost at least $300,000. In this renovation a 30-foot (9.1 m) tall rope swing was added along with other new playground equipment. -Source:

Near the corner of 17th Street & Ocean View Blvd.

The route we're going to traverse is pretty flat but we will accumulate about 6 miles of distance. We will attempt to maintain a moving pace of 3.5 mph so that we may finish by 8 p.m. and get back to our cars before dark. Everyone is encouraged to maintain their own individual paces within his/her comfort limits however the group goal is to work up to a higher average pace for better endurance & conditioning. Since this is a group hike, we will pause at major street and/or trail junctions to wait for everyone to regroup.

Walk will commence PROMPTLY at 6:10 p.m. so please be on time.

Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means being prepared with adequate hiking gear and making sure the difficulty level of the event IS NOT beyond the limits of your health & conditioning. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this. For more information regarding safety, please refer to the Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group "About" section for more details.
