Announcing a new Meetup for The Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group!

What: New Year's Day Hike: Soberanes Canyon (~4 Miles, ~700 Feet)

When: Saturday, January 1,[masked]:30 AM

Where: Carmel Crossroads
CA Hwy 1 @ Rio Road
Carmel, CA 93922

Ring in 2011 with a New Year's morning hike up Soberanes Canyon in beautiful Garrapata State Park. Located just 6.5 miles south of Rio Road in Carmel, Garrapata SP has two miles of beach front, with plentiful hiking options, coupled with diverse coastal vegetation and trails running from ocean beaches into dense redwood groves. Sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters frequent the coastal waters and California gray whales pass close by during their yearly migration.

Philomina Duesdieker, a long-time member of the Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group, has graciously volunteered to be the Event Host for this hike. Please join Phil and her husband Guy on what is sure to be a beautiful hike into one of the Big Sur coast's hidden gems.

Meetup Location: Carmel Crossroads (Hwy 1 & Rio Road)
Start Time: 8:30 a.m.
Hike Duration: 2 to 4 hours
Pace: Moderate (2 to 2.5 mph)
Total Distance: ~4 miles
Total Elevation Gain: ~700 feet
Difficulty: Moderate for Distance

THIS WILL BE A MODERATELY STRENUOUS HIKE due to a total distance of just under 4 miles. This will NOT be a speed hike and we will take time to enjoy the views of the redwoods and Soberanes Canyon. Trail conditions are generally in good shape from the trail head up to the turnaround point.

WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, wind & rain gear, lunch/snack, hat, gloves, 1-2 liters of water, long pants and long sleeve shirt (for poison oak protection).

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Reasonably fit and well conditioned hikers who can handle a 4-mile hike on single-track trail over moderately steep terrain.

Parking is extremely limited so WE WILL BE CARPOOLING TO THE TRAIL HEAD. For carpool setup and other arrangements, let's meet at the park-n-ride lot at the Carmel Crossroads shopping center near the corner of Rio Road and Hwy 1 at 8:30 a.m. From there we will carpool together for the approximately 15 minute drive to the trail head.

Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means being prepared with adequate hiking gear and making sure the difficulty level of the event IS NOT beyond the limits of your health & conditioning. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this. For more information regarding safety, please refer to the Monterey Bay Area Hiking Group "About" section for more details.
