North East, MD,
(just a two hour drive from Silver Spring, MD)
Dec. 6-7, 2014
Saturday, 2 p.m. - Sunday noon
Join professional photographers Vickie Lewis and Loren Fisher on a fun, action-packed photo adventure. During this two-day trip to northern Maryland, we will photograph bald eagles, the full moon rising behind a lighthouse and explore how to create a dynamic image of the lighthouse using light-painting techniques. It’s guaranteed to be a lot of learning, a lot of fun and a great time.
Photographing Bald Eagles
Each year over a hundred bald eagles gather at a hydroelectric plant as they make their way south to avoid the freezing lakes and rivers up north. Fish are sucked through the large turbines creating a great food source that attracts large numbers of bald eagles, great blue herons, gulls and other birds.
As a special bonus, we have worked with sponsor Ritz Camera to have three super-telephoto lenses for you to share as we photograph the full moon and then for the eagles. This is a great opportunity to shoot with a monster lens attached to your camera body.

An Easy, Fun Photography Tour
We have taken care of all the details for the weekend including the hotel. You just show up ready to shoot. We’ll have everything to do the light painting plus super telephoto lenses. Here’s what you get:
One night hotel
Expert instruction from two professional photographers
Socializing with other photographers
Shared use of a Nikon and a Canon super-telephoto lens
Unique opportunity to photograph a light-painted lighthouse
Instruction to help get great shots of bald eagles
Our Agenda...
Early Saturday afternoon we’ll meet and talk about how we will shoot the full moon and how we illuminate the lighthouse once the sun goes down. Then we’ll head out and photograph the full moon rising behind the Concord Point lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. Vickie and Loren will be helping you make sure you are getting beautiful photos. As the light leaves the sky, we will show you how to use “light painting” to illuminate the lighthouse with a flashlight. Everyone will be able to get great shots of the glowing lighthouse with a beautiful blue sky behind it - even if it is a cloudy day. Then we will meet for dinner and talk about our shots and how we are going to shoot the eagles and other birds in the morning. You’ll get to meet other photographers, this is a joint Meetup between Montgomery Co., MD, a D.C. suburb and Somerset Co., NJ, just outside New York City. Sunday morning we’ll be on location with the eagles at sunrise (7 a.m.) as the bird activity begins. It will be an exciting morning as we witness one of the largest bald eagle concentrations on the east coast.
Here’s what you need:
Your camera with spare batteries.
A tripod
Wired remote shutter switch.
Any lens that you have. Having your own telephoto will help, 200mm will work, but you will be hooking into 600mm to 800mm lenses.
Warm clothing - dress in layers so you can add more if needed.
Rain protection - for both you and your camera. We’ll be out shooting no matter the weather, although we obviously won’t see the full moon if it is cloudy, but we will still get great light painting shots in the rain!
*Meals not included.
