What happens in your brain at the moment of inspiration? Where do ideas come from? Are they just a product of brain chemistry? A muse? Dumb luck? This real-time experiment will explore the process of creation through improvised music, art, improv from UCB, and thought-provoking discussion by experts in the field of psychology and neuroscience.

Act One: Art & Music

George Hrab
Multi-instrumental musician George Hrab will improvise a sophisticated and completely unique musical performance while multidisciplinary artist Roman Hrab creates an original artwork, both inspired in real-time by what they see and hear. This unique experience will place the audience right in the middle of the creative process.

Act Two: Science

Brian WechtSteve Novella
Noted physicist and entertainer Brian Wecht will moderate a panel discussion and audience Q&A on the science of creation and improvisation. Participants will include George and Roman Hrab, Dr. Steven Novella (Assistant Professor of Neurology, Yale University School of Medicine), Dr. Heather Berlin (Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Mount Sinai School of Medicine), and members of the Upright Citizens Brigade and People’s Improv Theater.

Act Three: Comedy

New York’s top improvisers from the Upright Citizens Brigade and People’s Improv Theater will create spontaneous and hilarious comedy sketches, based only upon suggestions from the audience, a special to-be-announced NECSS speaker, and their own improvisational skills.
