January Discussion Dinner: MOOCs

What is higher education really all about? If it's just about acquiring knowledge then perhaps MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), like those given by Coursera, are a good alternative to increasingly expensive college tuition.  But many questions remain: what is the quality of these courses? Are they appropriate for all fields of study?  And ultimately, what are the relative merits of a classroom vs. an online education. Join us, in person, to discuss this and other education related topics.

A note on the fee to attend this meetup. First of all, if you are a NYC Skeptics member we will refund your fee or, if you prefer, email us and we will RSVP for you. As we previously explained, the fee is meant to encourage attendees to join NYC Skeptics as paying members, which can attend for free. We encourage all non-members to join by going to nycskeptics.org/join. Also, the fee will be refunded if you join within 3 months of paying for a meetup. NOTE: The fee will not be refunded if you cancel within 48 hours of the meetup.

[Sorry for the time lag. My PC has been on the blink for close to two weeks.] The meetup sessions frequently get filled up immediately after they're announced. This one sat at 7-8 RSVPs for a couple of weeks, until just a few days out. I thought that this might indicate that it was a dry topic that just didn't excite a lot of people. So it was gratifying to find a lively, vigorous conversation when the time actually came. The downside was that said conversation largely consisted of two sets of people talking *past* each other all evening.
