2 quick suggestions to kick off springtime.
#1: Bronx Botanical Orchid Show: I recently attended the Bronx Botanical Orchid Show and highly recommend a visit. They have a wonderful display in the large greenhouse and its definately worth a trip to the Bronx. You can take public transportation via Metro North. While I'm not an orchid maven, I believe they have enough varieties to satisfy the hardcore orchid growers out there.
#2: Brooklyn Botanic Garden: I became a member last April and this was one of the best memberships I have purchased. The BBG has many programs and events, some "members-only", some open to the public. As a member, all events are free.
I've taken several gardening classes (where I met the other Meetup organizer - Leslie), attended the Chili festival, private "Summertime picnic" events with jazz band and cocktails, and this past weekend, their Springtime Kickoff daylong event. Not only is the BBG a great place to relax, wander and get lost, - they also have great events and people to learn from. If you haven't joined, I highly recommend a membership OR, for you Manhattanites who have never traveled south to Brooklyn, 'cmon down for the day and poke around. You might be suprised. Or better yet, take a Saturday class on soil composition, rooftop gardening or basic gardening - you might see me or some of the other Meetup people there.
