Hi Group Tonight, I'm going to be at Butcher Bay, 511 East 5th St. between Ave A and Ave B tonight from 6 pm on, wearing a white baseball cap. and dark green patterned shirt.
My plan is that we can meet up there and since the group is very manageable, we can move across the street to our deck when the weather clears ( forecast says scattered thunderstorms) and there's still some light. So we will likely move over by 7:30 pm and can then stay on our deck until darker, 9:30 or so.
If it rains, come anyway. Likewise, if you're running late, come anyway. The three fastest ways to get here are: F train to Second Avenue and walk up Avenue A; OR go to Astor Place on the 6 train (about 12 minutes walk through the interesting East Village); OR get out at 14th Street and take a city 14A bus (not 14C or D)--very frequent service--East to get out at Avenue A and E 6th. At that point, you are a few feet away from Butcher Bay on East 5th.
Bring my cell number:[masked] and call if any questions, problems. If we move from the restaurant, they'll point you across the street immediately facing. Call us and I'll buzz you in. So come even if it looks like rain. These New York thunderstorms rarely last long.
Roof deck, balcony and city container gardeners are a dedicated breed, and hardy-- it can be difficult to grow things. Bugs, squirrels, leaks, pigeons, ice, heat, wind, broken umbrellas. Not to mention lugging bags of expensive dirt up long staircases and tethering your plants with wire so they won't get blown off the edge. Members will meet up to visit other peoples' decks, gardens, etc. and enjoy enthusiasms and views. We'll trade ideas about flowers, trees, structural aspects, and share in the pleasures of helping green things to survive in a tough environment. What makes it all worthwhile? The sky above, the rustle of leaves in the breeze on a hot summer night. You don't have to have a deck to belong, just an active interest in growing plants in the city. If you have a ledge or a windowsill with a flowerpot on it, feel free to join.
