Welcome to Out-Spoke-n, a new bike shop specializing in road, mountain and comfort cycling. If you’re like us - folks who ride for many reasons - you’ll feel right at home here. Our two-wheeled doctrine: Walking into a bike shop should be a pleasant, helpful, informative experience. It should never make you feel inadequate, no matter what your riding style or skill level may be. As cyclists, we’ve run into high walls of attitude and haughtiness that shroud a lot of bike shops. We’ve encountered many a shop attendant’s upturned nose, in the absence of quality customer service. And we didn’t much care for it. It harshed our cycling mellow. That’s why we made Out-Spoke-n different. No politics, egos, and snobbery that surround some other shops and cycling clubs. We have members who are just getting into cycling, and others who are gold medal olympic athletes.

So what's the Out-Spoke-n Frarority? It's our small club of customers, employees, and most importantly - Fellow riders. A combination Sorority and Fraternity of people who have a passion for the sport of cycling... The Out-Spoke-n Frarority.

THE WEEKLY SHOP RIDE

The roots of the Outspoken Saturday Morning Shop Ride can be traced to a group of road racers, triathletes and cycling enthusiasts who started riding together as a result of meeting each other at the shop. Though everyone had different training objectives, commonality was found in the need for a weekly endurance ride ridden at a moderate to fast pace.

The speed of the Outspoken ride is typically 18-21 MPH on the flats. Though everyone starts together, the ride usually splits into “A” & “B” options at a pre-determined point along the route. The “B” ride is normally an out and back ride along PCH with a short turn-around loop in Newport Beach or Corona Del Mar for a total ride distance of 30-35 miles. The “A” ride route varies from week to week, but is typically 50-60 miles with anywhere between 1000 and 2500 feet of climbing.

Anyone with a serviceable bicycle and a helmet is welcome to ride (and we’d love to have you). In general, designated ride leaders and sweepers, along with the rest of the riders in the group, will make a concerted effort to keep a cohesive formation and try to keep slightly slower riders from being dropped. However, due to the specific ride objective, we DO NOT operate with a strict “no-drop” policy. Instead, the group ride is intended to be a pace ride, with participants expected to maintain the pre-determined speeds and distance. Riders who are not certain of their ability are still welcomed to join and try the ride - We welcome all riders, even if you want to join for only part of the ride!

RULES OF THE RIDE

1. The ride leaves the shop every Saturday morning at 8 AM. Specific ride routes and other instructions are typically posted no later than the Wednesday evening prior to the ride on both the Outspoken Facebook and meetup.com pages. If on Saturday morning the streets are wet due to rain, the ride is cancelled.
2. All riders MUST wear a helmet. There are NO exceptions to this rule.

3. All riders MUST be over the age of 18.
4. Ipods and headphones are not allowed
5. The ability to maintain speeds of up to 21 MPH on the flats and a basic understanding of pack riding etiquette is recommended. However, if a rider has limited group riding experience, the rider is still welcome to ride at the back of the pack and seek advice from the designated ride leader(s) until he or she is comfortable with the dynamics of the ride.
6. The ride will stop at ALL red lights.
7. Though the ride is NOT considered a “no-drop” ride, all reasonable efforts will be made to keep the group together. The ride will always regroup at the top of climbs and at other locations noted by the ride leader(s). Note: rides returning to the shop via PCH Northbound typically speed up past normal ride parameters once across the Santa Ana River.
8. Though many of the members of the group are specifically training for various cycle events, we still like to have fun. The common thread for the ride is a love for cycling, a respect for safety and a desire to push limits in a positive and friendly environment.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
