2 Peaks and a Tunnel Hike: San Gabriel and Mt Lowe

2 Peaks and a Tunnel Hike: San Gabriel and Mt Lowe

Details

Join Kurt and George for a spectacular hike in the San Gabriels suitable for intermediate hikers. BEGINNERS will find this too difficult. Yes, it's a longish drive for most members, but the beauty of these mountains far surpasses anything in the Santa Monicas, Griffith Park, the Simi Hills, the Verdugos, the Santa Susanas, etc.

Shortly after the start, we'll hike through an incredible tunnel (more pics below) blasted through the first peak we'll ascend: San Gabriel, where we will be ABOVE Mt Wilson and looking down at the Observatory with majestic views of numerous surrounding mountains. Then we'll return to a trail junction and head up to the top of Mt Lowe, where we can relax on a metal bench and take in even more views, including our first peak as well as Inspiration Point below us but high above Altadena and Echo Mountain (which we have hiked several times as a group).

After bagging these peaks (and perhaps one more, if people wish), we'll drive to nearby Mt Wilson and have a dog and maybe a beer(BYOB) at the Cosmic Cafe. What could be cooler than that? Answer: nothing.

Directions: I usually try to dissuade people from relying on GPS, but for this location, you may need to use it. HOWEVER, before you go, click on the location link above and study the map. From the valley(s) take the I-210E and take CA-2 /Angeles Crest Highway exit, turning left to go north in/near to La Cañada/Flintridge. In about 14 miles turn right just after you see the small road sign indicating a right turn to go to Mt Wilson. Continue on to Mt Wilson Red Box Road. In just over 2 miles you will reach the trailhead "EATON SADDLE" on your right , with parking areas on both sides of the road. The adventure pass is needed also if you want to avoid a parking ticket. They can be obtained at many sporting goods stores for $5.

The next one is the view from San Gabriel, looking westward. This picture and the others that follow were all taken from Kurt's new iPhone 6, and not retouched at all in software.
