Hump Day at Limekiln Canyon

Hump Day at Limekiln Canyon

Details

Let's do Limekiln Canyon again, which sounds long for a weeknight, but it's not difficult because of the low elevation gain. It will be a dark night, as the moon doesn't rise until midnight, but that means we'll have nice views of the stars, in spite of the city lights. This hike starts at a trail head right on the north side of Rinaldi, west of Tampa. We'll meet there and start at, or very shortly after 6:30. If you are late, you may miss us.

The best part of this night hike are the views of the SF Valley lights, as we make our way parallel to Tampa and then cross the road to Wilbur Tampa Park to continue nearly to Reseda before turning back and returning by the same route to the cars. A scene or two from the "E.T." movie were filmed along our route. Whenever we do this hike (photos below), people seem to enjoy it, so why not do it again?

Distance: 7 miles
Elevation Gain: 650'
Difficulty: Easy side of intermediate
Dogs: Leashed, per State law
Restrooms: no
Water Fountain: no
Parking: Free on Rinaldi, both sides
Trail: Fire road and some single track, excellent condition
Sunset: 6:21 pm

Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes, slip-'n-fall

Directions: From the SF Valley, take the 118 to Tampa going north, then turn left on Rinaldi. When you see the gigantic church on the left, you can park on Rinaldi. There are more parking spots on the OTHER side by the church, but be careful turning around and then crossing the road on foot. The trailhead is on the north side of Rinaldi with a big "Limekiln Canyon" sign. Coming from Simi, you can take the Porter Ranch exit, north to Rinaldi, then turn right and go past Corbin a short distance until you get to the huge church on your right, and park on Rinaldi. Be careful crossing Rinaldi to the trail head on the other side. It's a busy road.
