Literary Hike - Oil! by Upton Sinclair

Details

I suggest this literary hike to discuss the great book "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair on which the movie "There Will Be Blood" is (loosely) based. The novel was written in 1927 and although the Oil Business features prominently in the book, so does the Zeitgeist of the early 20th century: woman emancipation, communism, economic growth. All these factors should make for some lively and lovely conversation!

In tradition with the other literary hikes led by Dave, let's plan on stopping in the picnic area for some snacks and refreshments mid-hike. Suggested hike start is the parking area at the West end of Ave De Los Arboles, get on the trail and stay on the main trail to Lizard Rock (climbing to the top optional) and come back down to the picnic area. Lights and possibly jackets are recommended.

Distance: approx 4 miles round trip

Elevation: about 1,000 ft loss/gain

Dogs: on a leash

Restrooms: Flush! toilets about 1.5 miles into the pleasant shady canyon stroll.

Sunset: 6.10 PM according to google

Known Dangers: rattlesnakes are possible, poison oak and hurtling mountain bikers are generally present, slip-'n-fall is practically inevitable.

Directions Directions to the hike: From the 23 freeway in Thousand Oaks, CA exit Avenida de Los Arboles westward toward Moorpark Road, stop briefly at Trader Joes at the corner of Arboles and Moorpark Road, obtain fun happy hour items to share, continue westward on Arboles to the end and the dirt parking lot about a mile or two past Lynn Road. If you are worried about the gate closing after dark, feel free to park on adjacent streets but please be respectful of neighbors who value their serenity more than even hikers.
