Beginner Hikes, 2016: #2 Botanical Garden to Serra Cross

This second Beginner Series hike for 2016 features very pretty flowers just above downtown Ventura, terminating in stunning views of Ventura harbor from Grant Park at the Serra Cross, named after a Franciscan monk who founded Ventura Mission. There has been a cross at this site continuously since 1782, and it is a popular spot for weddings. (Let me know if you plan to get married during this hike, ok?)

After the hike, those of us who are interested can select an eatery in downtown Ventura for dinner, since that will be our starting and ending location for the hike. Hopefully, one of you will be familiar with the eateries, as I am not, and can make a suggestion.

I strongly suggest allowing at least 30 extra minutes for the drive than what your smart-ass phone will suggest just because northbound 101 on weekends can be very unpredictable and often has nasty slowdowns through Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura. If you get there too early, who cares? There are worse places in the world to kill time in.

Distance: slightly less than 2.5 miles

Elevation Gain: only 300'

Difficulty: Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy

Dogs: No

Restrooms: Nearby, but not at the Botanical Garden itself.

Rain cancels the hike. (I'll reschedule after celebrating the much-needed moisture.)

Here are a few pictures. We begin on a mostly paved garden trail that includes places like this, as well as numerous benches to sit on all the way up.

When we get off that garden trail, we'll continue up a very short distance to catch this view, before heading back down a bit to a road.

Known Dangers: It's possible, even at a place like this to encounter a rattlesnake, but highly unlikely.

Driving Directions: I have shamelessly plagiarized these directions from another source: From Highway 101 northbound, exit on California Street. Stay in the center lane, make a right and drive 3 blocks north. Turn right on Poli Street, then make an immediate left into the parking lot behind City Hall. (From Highway 101 southbound, exit on Ventura Avenue. Turn right on Thompson Boulevard, make a left on California Street and drive 3 blocks north. Turn right on Poli Street, then left into the parking lot behind City Hall.) Locate the trailhead in the upper parking lot.
