Three great books I recommend to every curious person on the planet are:

Honoring the Self
by Nathaniel Branden

The Six Pillars Of Self-Esteem
by Nathaniel Branden

Real-Time Relationships: The Logic of Love
by Stefan Molyneux

And my absolute favorite psychotherapeutic workbook, which involves sentence completion exercises, or "sentence stems"--for getting acquainted with and respectfully integrating your vast subconscious mind and emotions (also by NB) is:
The Art of Self-Discovery
http://www.nathanielb...

An inspiring and learned book about child psychology (my favorite):
The Secret of Childhood
by Maria Montessori

Ginott was a friend of Nathaniel Branden and well-versed in parenting techniques:
Between Parent and Teenager
by Haim Ginott

"Most parenting guides begin with the question 'How can we get kids to do what they're told?' -- and then proceed to offer various techniques for controlling them. In this truly groundbreaking book, nationally respected educator Alfie Kohn begins instead by asking 'What do kids need - and how can we meet those needs?' What follows from that question are ideas for working with children rather than doing things to them."

"For the past 10 years or so I have been traveling around the world. I have now been to about 40 countries. I believe I have a lot of experience to share with people. I share many of these experiences freely on my main website EQI.org. I have also been doing a lot of volunteer work, particulary with emotionally abused youth. From them I have learned a lot about emotional intellignce and emotional abuse. My writing on these subjects now is in the top 3 on Google in both areas."

"Nonviolent Communication(sm) Skill Training presents a collection of simple effective techniques which facilitate cooperation and satisfaction in our communication with others and within ourselves. The use of these skills does not depend on the knowledge or use of the skills by others."

"By thinking of family interactions in particular with that in mind [the nature of disagreement], TCS addresses a very important problem: the problem of people in families hurting each other. 'Hurting each other?' queried Wendy. 'Oh I don't think that many parents are into corporal punishment these days, Sarah.' I wasn't particularly talking about corporal punishment, I was just referring to the idea many people have, that for one person to get what she wants, another has to suffer—in other words, not get what she wants. What I am saying is that we can all get what we want. No one enjoys making loved ones suffer. But it doesn't have to be like that.”

The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education
by Grace Llewellyn

"Aware Parenting is a philosophy of child rearing that has the potential to change the world. Based on cutting-edge research and insights in child development, Aware Parenting questions most traditional assumptions about raising children, and proposes a new approach that can profoundly shift a parent's relationship with his or her child. Parents who follow this approach raise children who are bright, compassionate, competent, nonviolent, and drug free."

"Dr. Gottman’s research has also shown that an important element to successful parenting was based on how parents interacted with each other when emotions ran hot. Dr. Gottman and other researchers have observed that children benefit the most when parents have a strong relationship. It isn't so much about staying married for the sake of the kids. Couples need to stay happily married, if they can, in order to help their children. In families where the parents aren't living with each other or are not going to stay married, the parents can best help their children by minimizing their children's exposure to destructive conflict. High levels of parental conflict create emotional distress on the children and decrease effective parenting skills."

"Trashing Teens
Psychologist Robert Epstein argues in a provocative book, 'The Case Against Adolescence,' that teens are far more competent than we assume, and most of their problems stem from restrictions placed on them."
http://www.psychology...

"Working with colleague Diane Dumas, Dr. Epstein has developed a unique and comprehensive test—the Epstein-Dumas Test of Adultness (EDTA)—that measures 14 different competencies that appear to define adult functioning in modern society. Based on scores obtained from tens of thousands of adults and teens, Dr. Epstein recently concluded that American teens are, on the average, just as competent as American adults—and that adults greatly underestimate the abilities of our teens. Epstein and Dumas have also demonstrated a link between 'infantilization'—the extent to which teens are treated like children—and behavioral problems in teens."
