Testing: Year One

Details

Abstract:

Coming from companies with loose or nonexistent testing cultures, I was suddenly a technical co-founder at ePantry. I was The Guy; getting the late-night Pingdom alerts, exception emails, and frantic co-founder phone calls. Thus ePantry decided to charge forward and Test All The Things! With only YouTube videos and pretentious Hacker News comments to guide us, the ePantry team learned many lessons the hard way. But after a year of unit, integration, browser automation, and front-end testing, ePantry can refactor and deploy with confidence and uses pragmatic automated testing to accelerate development. We'll look at the different types of tests we use, a few 'ah-ha!' moments from the past year, and some concrete examples of refactoring for testability. Leave the religion at home -- and use automated testing to do more, faster.
