Speaker: Rick Heiges, SQL Server MVP

There are many approaches to SQL Server Consolidation. Each organization has unique business rules that impact the decision on which approach fits their needs. This session will cover the various approaches from Instance Stacking / Virtualization to Appliances and where they "fit".  You'll hear about methods for data collection from Perfmon to Powershell and the Microsoft MAP Toolkit.  Lastly, Rick will discuss strategies to uncover the business rules, as these will be the true limiting factors of how far a consolidation effort can go.

He'll also take a look at Microsoft's latest Fast Track architecture for a Private Cloud and how that may play into your strategy.

You'll learn:

  • The various features of SQL Server that enable consolidation
  • Different approaches for consolidating SQL Server
  • How to start building a framework for your organization
  • How licensing may impact your framework
  • How virtualization may fit into your consolidation strategy

I come from a very heavy background in SQL Server consolidation (VM, Hardware, instance stacking, SQL Server farms, clustered instance stacking, etc.) so there was not a lot of new information that I got from the presentation. It was however very nicely presented and put together, and I would definitely recommend this presentation for someone who is new to database consolidation.

My feedback is relative. Since my level of understanding when it comes to systems management and Sql Server management is lower than most in that audience, SOME of the material was over my head in terms of the specifics but understandable in broader strokes.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
