Lately the Reiner Knizia games, Ascension, etc. It changes often as I tend to overplay them and move on.
I'm wired to construct 'systems', so most of what I design follows a pattern like that. I like puzzling out patterns to gamify situations/scenarios. As an example, my current (amateur) card game is a space-based building/bidding simulation.
