SQL Server includes the Service Broker, which provides a way to use queuing within your database application. Queuing (aka "asynchronous messaging") is simply the practice of dividing data processing tasks into pieces that can be performed independently, instead of always running everything together within a single transaction.
Service Broker is woefully underused. The bottom line is that queuing can provide huge improvements in the scalability of your SQL Server applications.
