Doin' the big, Fig Newton Canyon

Doin' the big, Fig Newton Canyon

http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/2/f/e/event_99465822.jpegIf you haven't read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, about his (mis)adventures attempting to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, do yourself a favor and pick up this hilarious, informative hiking tome. Something tells me Bill would be right at home traipsing through Newton Canyon's oak shade- one of the closest things you'll get to back east woods in the Santa Monica Mountains.

http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/a/2/4/event_99467652.jpeg(of course, something tells me Keanu Reeves and his A Walk In the Clouds castmates would be right at home, too, based on some of our hikes here)

From the Kanan Rd trailhead, we'll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over to Zuma Ridge Trail. On the ridge, we'll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific (unless Keanu shows up). On our way there, we'll cross a stout footbridge, pass under an oak canopy, and come out into an opening. At the opening, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance, and you'll see Upper Newton Falls spilling through them like a ribbon.

http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/9/8/e/event_99467502.jpegThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles, with 1000' total elevation gain, most of it leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view- Buzzards Roost. The beginning and end of the hike are nicely shaded, the middle portion is exposed- prepare accordingly.

Directions:

From the 101, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right.

From Pacific Coast Highway, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel.
