Bit o' Boney Backbone ~ Kanan to Latigo Canyon ~ A Gentler Hike

Details
Join us for a new gentler hike! It's the same starting point as our Fig Newton hike but from the Newton Canyon Trailhead parking lot at Kanan and the southernmost tunnel, instead of heading northwest, we'll head east to Latigo Canyon Road. This hike is 5 miles with about 850' of elevation gain.

We'll climb up a short, steep hill to cross Kanan on top of the tunnel, then continue less steeply uphill to the hilltop near Upper Ramirez Mountainway. We'll then drop down into Newton Canyon:

and then climb up and out to Latigo Canyon Road. We'll cross the road, take a short break and then turn around and find our way back. Start to finish, the hike should take about two hours.

This hike has great vistas of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island as well as Sandstone Peak and Castro Crest, as well as really lovely oaks.

Be prepared for loose rock on our short climb to the path above the tunnel; the rest of the way, the trail is packed dirt.
Pace: This is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace than a regular Trailblazer hike, and we'll take more breaks. The purpose is to give novice and intermediate hikers who may feel they're not up to a regular hike a chance to get out and experience our beautiful trails. Faster hikers are welcome to come along, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace.
No dogs allowed on morning hikes
Directions:
From the 101, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right.
From Pacific Coast Highway, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel.
