There's a piece of the Backbone Trail between Castro Crest and Corral Canyon that the Blazers rarely do, and today we'll close the gap between two hikes we've done often. We'll begin in Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff until we reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way, we'll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb to Mesa Peak Motorway, at the top of Corral Canyon.

We're starting high, dipping down, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we're accustomed to in this area. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice, we'll "ford" seasonal streams that have been out of season for all too long. The climb up to Mesa Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky, leveling off for an amble over to the sandstone giants and ocean views we all love. Nearby is the famous Jim Morrison cave, featuring carved Doors' lyrics, painted art, and a skull relief reputed to have been carved by the Lizard King himself.
