This is a leisure ride, perfect for cyclists that can average 13 mph or faster. The ride leaves from The Wheel Cyclery and goes through North Kansas City to the downtown airport. It is an 18 mile round-trip ride with several short climbs and one long climb. You can add mileage by doing one or more laps around the airport. Each lap adds about 4 miles, so the faster riders can do two laps, which would put you close to 26 miles round trip. If you are new to riding with a group, or you just want a casual ride to round out your week, then this is a great ride for you. There are two Ride Leaders on this group, one toward the front, and one at the back with the last rider. Roll-out is at 6pm.
If you are new to cycling, or you are unsure about the minimum distance, speed, or the hills, then we encourage you to meet the group in North Kansas City at Macken Park. We will roll past the Northwest corner of the park (32nd and Howell) at about 6:20, so you can join in there, ride to the airport, do a lap if you like, and we will go back by the park on the way back and you can drop off there. This will give you between 8 to 12 miles, and no hills.
Please remember:The Wheel Ride Club Group Rides are a fun, safe way to meet other riders, learn new routes, and get to ride with a group. All of our rides are led by at least one Group Ride Leader that leads the ride, keeps the group together, and carries flat repair stuff—just in case. Please remember that we obey the rules of the road; Ride to the right of the lane, no more than two abreast, and obey all stop signs and traffic signals.
All rides are held WEATHER PERMITTING. If the temperature is below 50, or the roads are wet then we will not ride. Check Facebook for the most up-to-date info about ride cancellations.
