New Meetup: Thayer Glacier

Announcing a new Meetup for The Bend Hiking Meetup Group!

What: Thayer Glacier

When: September 6,[masked]:30 AM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: Hike to Thayer Glacier adjacent to North Sister. We'll start at the Pole Creek trailhead. This hike takes an unmaintained trail off the Green Lakes trail. We follow Soap Creek up to a ridge that heads right up to North Sister. A quick scramble up a rocky slope gets us to Thayer Glacier.
Directions: Take the McKenzie Pass 1.3 miles out of Sisters. Turn left on FS 15. Drive 11 miles to the Pole Creek trailhead. Because the Pole Creek trailhead is a popular spot and parking spaces tend to fill up quickly on weekends, I made the meetup time 7:30.
This hike is 5 miles in and 5 miles out with an elevation gain of around 2400 feet. Over 60% of this trek will be on either an unmaintained trail or cross-country. We've done this hike and know exactly where we're going, but if anyone lags too far behind the group the possibility of losing the trail and getting lost is very real. We hiked this last weekend and lost the trail on more than one occasion. Because this is a strenuous hike to begin with and involves some trails that aren't as easily followed we're going to have to ask that those of you who are slower hikers and tend to lag behind during these rambles sit this one out.
