From Marco Santini, Product Person at INCLUSION...
"I'm the Founder and Chief Optimist at INCLUSION ( INCLUSION combines Table Tennis and Racquetball to create an exciting, more intense playing experience.  The revolutionary Plexiglass side walls create an added dimension for skilled players to produce advanced, angled shots while, as a bonus, functioning as "bumpers" to help novice players enhance their skills.  I'm hoping to discuss marketing strategies, customer acquisition, app development and company expansion.

Apologies. I really wanted to make it to the event last night, but the weather was a concern. Is there any way to get some key take aways from the Inclusion talk? I love table tennis and Marco's promo video does a great job showing you how addictive his product is.

Short version for those looking for a quick takeaway: initiate more conversation with customers, rather than merely responding when they raise concerns.

Thanks, Yangbo. That certainly makes sense.

"Developers don't know what they're supposed to do. They need Product Managers to TELL them what to do," one commentator said.

Wow, and everywhere we've moved to "Collaborative" everything (Collaborative Consumption, Collaborative Makers, Collaborative Crowd-Funding etc).

Are PMs like that commentator saying, "Collaboration is dead and hierarchical us vs them is the way forward?"

    January 3, 2014

    • Twain

My view is that the PM-developer relationship is symbiotic like every relationship. The more both sides can communicate and value what the other does, the more efficient and effective the Project Build can be. Any type of "PM knows the product and what developers should be doing and developers don't know" or vice versa is not only myopic, it's the quickest way to alienate the people with the skills to actually MAKE the product the best it can be.

      January 3, 2014

    • Twain

If that means PMs adapt their roles to learning a bit more about code so they experience "walking in the shoes of developers" that will make them open up and comprehend more about the Product Process on a more full-cycle basis. Likewise, lots of devs I know are "walking in the shoes of PMs" by researching the business case, doing the wireframes, drafting the Product Roadmaps, scheduling key funnel timelines etc. Neither role should feel threatened by the other simply because PMs and devs want to know more so they can build a better product.
