Thingscon Salon #4 - Can the Internet of Things create a Smart Society?

The fourth edition of the Thingscon Salon will be taken place in Eindhoven, Strijp-S this July 8th (note: new date).

This edition - organised in close partnership with VPRO Medialab - touches the theme of the role of the design of our connected world in relation to the smart society. The smart city is often approached from the city level, with optimisation as driver. What if we take the citizen as starting point, and how to build a society in the city if everything becomes smart. What is role of the things of the city?

Thingscon Salon is a monthly focused event, organised by the team of Thingscon Amsterdam, the successful conference on the designing and making of the new connected things.

Programme

In the meetup we start with a short recap of the results of the workshop.

Afterwards we have invited some interesting projects that deal with the design of a smart society to share their vision and learnings on a smart society in practice. We close the evening with a keynote talk.

And of course we have lots of possibilities to interact afterwards during the drinks.

The program with speakers run from 17:30 - 20.00 hrs, and we have drinks after.

About the speakers:

Peter van Waart

Peter van Waart is lecturer at the course Communication & Multimedia Design and researcher for Smart & Inclusive Society in research center Creating 010, both of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS).

His PhD study at TU Delft focus on guidelines for designing meaningful technology applied in the urban domain. Peter is one of the founders of Rotterdam Open Data and StadsLab Rotterdam. He initiated and coordinated the minor Urban Interaction Design (Urban IxD) to explore the interplay between technology, people and the city. Next to that he initiated and organised the Global Service Jam Rotterdam, the Rotterdam GovJam and the International Internet of Things Day Rotterdam.

Peter is currently one of the consortium partners together with Erasmus University and TU Delft in the STW funded research through design project Participatory City Making. All of this aims for the participation of citizens in in the design of meaningful applications for urban living.

Lorna Goulden

Lorna Goulden is Director of Creative Innovation Works, an innovation company located in the Netherlands. A former Creative Director and Innovation Manager at Philips Electronics, Lorna has spent over 20 years combining creativity and design thinking to promote a user value perspective in business innovation.

She is the author of the award-winning vision Strijp-S: Creating a Public Lighting Experience and creative directed its implementation at an urban redevelopment in the city of Eindhoven. She is a founding member of the global Think Tank Council: The Internet of Things; a hub for policy debate, practice and the implementation of the Internet of Things, and works across a wide range of industries for companies such as AGC Automotive, Cisco, DAF-trucks, NXP, Philips, Reckitt Benckiser, Volker Wessels and Ziggo to bring customer centric, lean and technology-impact strategies to innovation development.

Lorna is initiator of the The Things Network in Eindhoven, a community driven network for the Internet of Things.

Dries de Roeck

Dries is a next generation alchemist, moving back and forth between the design and research field. Over the past years he has been intrigued by what position a designer can or should take in a world in which digital and non-digital ‘things’ are overlapping. He is interested in the way people use and adapt technology in their day to day context, and how this can be an inspiration towards more humane & meaningful network connected products.

Dries leads all things research at the creative agency Studio Dott in Antwerp, Belgium. He is involved as guest lecturer at the University of Antwerp’s faculty of Design Sciences, the Artevelde University College Ghent and the Karel de Grote University College. He’s also involved as board member of the SigCHI Belgium community and co-organises several Internet-of-Things events in Belgium.

Dries will share insights from the European project: C³PO : Collaborative City Co-design PlatfOrm. As a partner of this European project, creating a ‘data platform’

Frank Kresin

Frank Kresin is Research Director at Waag Society, institute for Arts, Science and Technology, based in Amsterdam. Waag Society develops and researches open, fair and inclusive technology for social innovation, putting people and their needs at the center. It pro-actively involves artists, scientists and entrepreneurs in early stages to come up with truly useable systems and services.

Frank’s background is in Artificial Intelligence and film making, and his interest is in developing technology for societal goals. He was involved at the start of many international innovation programmes, amongst them Apps for Europe, City SDK, CineGrid Amsterdam, Code 4 Europe, Making Sense and the Amsterdam Smart Citizens Lab. Frank has spoken, written and lectured on Open Innovation, Open Data & Open Design, Users-as-Designers, Living Labs and Smart Citizens. He is a regular moderator at design and innovation workshops in the Netherlands and abroad.

Furthermore, Frank is secretary board member at the Dutch chapter of the Internet Society, and treasurer at The Mobile City, and member of the Erfgoed & Locatie steering committee and advisory board member at Fund for the Creative Industries.

Rob van Kranenburg

Rob van Kranenburg wrote The Internet of Things. A critique of ambient technology and the all-seeing network of RFID, Network Notebooks 02, Institute of Network Cultures. He is co-founder of bricolabs and the founder of Council. Together with Christian Nold he published Situated Technologies Pamphlets 8: The Internet of People for a Post-Oil World. He currently works as Community Manager at the EU Project Sociotal, and Ecosystem Manager of the Horizon 2020 Project TagItSmart. Rob is co-editor of Enabling Things to Talk Designing IoT solutions with the IoT Architectural Reference Model, Springer Open Access. Rob is in the SmartCitiesWorld Advisory Board.
