"Tokyo On Rails" is currently a small group of Ruby On Rails enthusiasts living in Tokyo, Japan, with the hope of building a strong Rails community for the greater Tokyo area.
Ruby On Rails is more than just a web application framework. It is the product of various development principles, indeed a development philosophy. It is the result of a process, whereby a need is fulfilled by the "needer" himself or "needers" themselves (at first DHH, now the Rails development community). It is open-source and supported by a wide array of add-ons and plug-ins. It is new, organic, and constantly evolving.
The down-side to Rails is that it is difficult for newcomers to learn and keep up with. This gives it a reputation for being somewhat esoteric. However there is also a benefit to this kind of inaccessibility: it cannot be tackled alone. Sharing, communication, cooperation are integral. Community. It is not surprising that Rails communities are some of the most active and productive development communities in the development world.
Tokyo On Rails recognizes the incredible value that community brings to Rails, as well as Japan's special part in the global Rails community as the mothercountry of the Ruby programming language.
