NOTE: This event will be outdoors in High Park, weather permitting. If it rains, it will be at one of the organizers' homes nearby. Please only RSVP yes if you are fine with both possibilities.

Coward's wit and precision as a modern dramatist is nowhere better exemplified than in this classic modern plays from 1930. Elyot Chase and Amanda Prynne (originally played by Gertrude Lawrence and Noël Coward), divorced from one another five years previously, arrive coincidentally at the same French hotel. They are honeymooning with their respective new spouses. Each is at once horrified and fascinated by the other. Together they leave for Paris and begin a roundelay of quarrels and love intrigues that culminate in their getting back together. (From the Toronto Public Library website.)

The book is available at the Toronto Public Library. You have two options:

  1. Search for "Private Lives" and put on hold the book with the yellow cover.

  2. Search for "Three Plays" and put on hold the book "Three Plays: Blithe Spirit, Hay Fever, Private Lives."

Please note that we recently had a meeting where members expressed some concerns. The following reminders are a result of that meeting:

  1. Please try your best to bring your own book, as we have found that people find it more comfortable not to have to share. We will always pick books that are in plentiful supply at the library. The trick is to sign up for the event and immediately go to the Toronto Public Library website to put the book on hold.

  2. Please be on time as we start promptly. If you must be late, please come into the room quietly and take a seat. We’ll greet you as soon as there is a suitable break in the reading.

  3. Please note that every reader must have their own Meetup profile. Because of the nature of what we do, our group does not allow guests or +1’s.

  4. As a play reading group, we can only accommodate about 12 people at each reading. That means that many don’t get a chance to attend. Please only RSVP yes or waiting list if you are serious about reading with us. If your plans change, please amend your RSVP promptly so others get a chance.
