Hometown: Venus & Mars
June 13, 2012
Mainly a compulsive one. Sometimes brilliant; often too wordy. For my sins I spent two and a half decades on Madison Avenue - JWT, Y&R, Ted Bates, B&B and my own Core Concept Inc. I did well, peaked as V.P., Creative on America's biggest TV spot account but breathed a sigh of relief when I finally got out. I've sold a number of screenplays, developed several sitcoms, now mainly write for the nices producer in the world: me. I had a book adaptation of one of my screenplays and am presently editing a seven volme auto-bio that will kick off on Skoob-E-Books.
I never chose to. The Devil made me do it. No, to be serious, I think it goes back to the 1940s at the CKEY Drama Workshop which used syndicated radio plays from Radio Writers Laboratory in Lancaster, PA. I was still in my teens but I felt that most of the plays could be improved so I wrote to the syndicators to ask if they would look at plays I wrote. They welcomed me and I started writing. Ironically, the first sale they made for me was to a radio station in Edmonton, Alberta.
I have no "most." It's a bit like the line from that lyric - "When I'm not near the girl that I love, I love the girl I'm near." It's easier to pinpoint what I've LEAST like to write about: half baked ideas from Hollywood producers who think they can write but can't even read - or for ad clients who are dolts. Though I've been fortunate to have some very bright and appreciative ones, too.
I've paid the rent acting-writing-directing-producing in theatre-radio-TV-films and as lyricist-composer-publicist-author-music publisheretc. I'm launching a new publishing company, will be looking for writers, which is why your group interests me.
