Hydro Fields & Bungalows

Experience the biking infrastructure of Scarborough. Majority of the route will be bike friendly or empty residential streets, but biking on major streets without a bike lane will be necessary. See route map here: http://goo.gl/maps/37kgf

We will be travelling 18-20 km/hour. Riders should be prepared to tackle hills. It is a long and winding route so it is essential that everyone be able to keep up.

Start: Broadview Ave & Cosburn Ave
Leg 1: 13.71 km - cyclists can exit at Kennedy Subway Station
Leg 2: 6.1 km - 30 minute rest stop at Coffee Culture, 2060 Ellesmere Rd
Leg 3: 8.18 km - cyclists can exit at Guildwood GO Station (http://www.gotransit.com/publicroot/en/PDF/Timetables/CurrentBoard/Table09.pdf) or take the 86 Scarborough bus (bike racks available) to Kennedy Station (http://www.ttc.ca/Routes/86/Westbound.jsp).
Leg 4: 23.23 km - the most difficult portion of the ride with rolling hills and frequent trips on Kingston Road.
Finish: Ed's Real Scoop, 920 Queen St. E.
Total: 51.23 km

@Joe Thanks for helping me with flat tires. And sorry for holding everyone up! Hopefully next time no flat tires :P

    July 21, 2013

    • Hyedie H.

I ride 115 front and back otherwise I get pinch flats too.

David, how old are your tires? Is the rim tape still working? When the rim tape gets old, it won't protect the tube from the rough, sharp edges of the wheels.

      July 24, 2013

    • David B.

Mike and Hyedie, thank for the replies. I do 125psi in both tires. I was talking to another rider and he suggested I get 140psi tires in the back. I think I'm heavier than usual rider, 220pounds and I have a backpack which is probably 20pounds. Maybe the heavier weight is why I get pinch flats. The bike is just 3 months old so everything on it is still pretty much new. The rim tape seems to be fine, nothing sharp but maybe I should Mr. tuffy rim tape? I heard that's good.

Thanks so much for a wonderful ride. I meant to post this last night, but here is a 20 min Yoga for Cyclists session. Really good after a long ride - zero twinges the next day. https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/20-min.-yoga-sessions-from/id259744514

Awesome ride organized by Denise. Thoroughly enjoyed, very content with amount of workout. Weather was also great! This was my first ride, didn't get a chance to talk to everyone, but ones I did speak to were really nice and friendly. Will certainly attend again. Thanks again Denise, was nice meeting you.

Perfect weather and really great route ... a good mix of flats hills residential and road. A couple of challenging slow incline hills but I love those! Thanks Denise for organizing this. :)

The route map is available for you to discover on your own, though I do not recommend doing this route after the sun goes down, as it will not be well lit.

I was just wondering is the TTC/Go train is optional? Some riders will take a train and others ride the whole way?

    July 16, 2013

    • Denise I

Yes, there are two optional exit points, in case cyclists don't have the time to complete the entire route, or do not feel up to the distance. The first optional exit will take cyclists to Kennedy Station. The second optional exit is at Guildwood GO Station, but there is an 86 Scarborough bus stop right across the street that goes to Kennedy Station. Links to route schedules are in the description above.

Is there parking in the area?

    July 14, 2013

    • Denise I

Would you prefer to park at the start line or the finish line? Either way, there should be street parking in each neighbourhood, especially in the residential streets.

Hello and thanks for organising the ride. I was wondering if the 12pm start is set in stone or we can start earlier around 10ish-10:30? If not, no problemo!

    July 7, 2013

    • Denise I

I started this same ride with friends at 10am, and we had a leisurely lunch at noon. Unfortunately for Toronto Bike Meetup attendees, I don't want to break for lunch during this ride. So, the 12pm start is to allow for a hardy brunch, and hopefully, the scheduled coffee pit stop will tie everyone over until ice cream at the end.

      July 7, 2013

  • Brian M.

    Sounds like a great route.

    1 · July 7, 2013

  • Steve M.

Parts of Kingston Road are under construction. Will the ride be going through any of that?

    July 7, 2013

    • Denise I

If there are no pedestrians, we will be riding on the sidewalk. If there are pedestrians, we will walk our bikes. I just did this route yesterday, and biked on the sidewalk right in front of a cop. I think he understood that the construction made biking impossible, and we were not a safety risk to anyone. So, if you morally object to biking on sidewalks in all situations, this ride is not for you.

Nooooooo~ maybe it's just not meant to be. It's the Toronto Triathlon Festival so I'll be cheering Andre on that day.

Yes!! I'll do the test ride with you :) Thanks!
